Try to cut the onion under running water.

Also -try not to breathe in or stand over the onion fumes as you cut.

Buy a milder onion - ask you grocer which variety to use if you don't have Vidalias (which are sweet onions) available where you shop. You can also peel and slice 'em under running water to help keep down the natural vapors that come from a freshly cut onion.

You either need to cut the onion in a bowl of shallow water or I did hear once that if you have your mouth full of water that your eyes can't water at the same time - no idea why but apparently it works

Yes, cut your onion under cool running water. Also try the sweet variety of onions. I don't seem to have any problems cutting them.

The best way to peel an onion is under running water. Try a food chopper, as it is quick and easy. I have heard of many ways to chop an onion so as to avoid crying. None of them have worked as well as a food chopper.

Hrm, I've not heard of the water or freezer answers before - I was always told to only breathe through the mouth & not the nose when cutting onions!

Spanish onions are less potent than English so start there.
Also, I have found that if you avoid chopping through the root end of the onion you don't cry. it always works.

There are many things you can cook with, that do not require onions.

If you do have to prepare onions, run them under running water whilst preparing them.
