Yes it works, just don't go to a black belt factory were you can get a black belt in 1 to 2 years. It should take 4 to 5 years.

Yes, if taught by the proper teacher. as with any martial art. Karate is great for upper body work so if your fighting a boxer and your really excel than you have an advantage but fighting some one in kick boxign if you watch most karate practitioners they tend to havea weak leg defences. but every form has its weakness's you jsut gotta take the time to make it change like if you knwo your fighitng someo en in taekwando pull your stance tighter and your legs are no longer week. And thats assuming your doing shotokan karate. And you might want to be more speciic as to which dialect of karate is more profiecient as there are many types.

Yes, of course, but it depends on the individual using it. Martial Arts are like a tool and your instructor is there to show you how to use it, but ultimately your the one who makes it work. Without any effort on your behalf, the tool becomes useless.
One of my instructors would say that Martial Arts are like an axe. Let's say you hand two people each an axe an tell them to go chop wood for an entire day. While one individual just chops wood throughout the day without stopping, the other person stops every hour to sharpen his/her axe. The result is that the person who sharpens his/her axe chops more wood at the end of the day because the other person ended up with a dull axe midway through.
While the story sounds very "Mister Miyagi-like" it opened my eyes to how different approches to doing the same thing can yield totally different results. So, the real question isn't "Does Karate really work?", but rather, "Can you make it work for you?"

Knowing one style these days dont qualify as work or not work. If by work, you mean does it work on the street? Sure, it can. Against your common thug you could probably best him in many situations. Is it 100%, nothing is 100%. Best you can do is be well rounded in all areas of combat. Reality combat training schools tend to focus on these real life situations where you might be confronted with a situation.
Karate is style, form, real street fights dont have any style or form most of the time. Its jus some "badass" trying to best someone for whatever motive they have.
Like I said, the best you can do is be well-rounded in all areas of combat. At least you will build the confidence nessicary to deal with a situation.

How would you define "work"? Learning karate doesn't mean that you can physically beat up a person to consider that it works. The way I look at it is that knowing karate means you are disciplined to control yourself knowing that if it's really needed to, you can actually beat the hell out of a person.

Generally, it does work. But it depends on the style, more traditional styles like Goju-Ryu or Shotokan will still work but will probably require more years of training and whatnot, because it's hard to apply style to a street fight, like somebody already said, and it's a difficult transition from an ideal situation into real life.
Other styles, like Kyokushin, Ashihara, etc that are more combat oriented would probably work best, since the spars are real and without protection. Plus, the styles and stances are not so rigid.

I am not sure what you mean by "work".
Karate is a valid martial art. It has been around for a very long time.
It's purpose is three fold in the following matter of importance
1) Perfection of character
2) Physical fitness
3) Self-defense

what do you mean does it WORK??
Work in which way? As in, is it effective? Well if it's taught by the right person in a traditional, or at least toughtful, way, then yes it is very effective, both in mind and body. Judging by your question "does it WORK" i'd say you've never done any sort of Martial Arts and I suggest reading up a bit on Martial Arts before joining.

Yes certain style such as Kyokushin and seido are very effective. Stay away from black belt factory. You will know it because you will see students spend most of the class time doing role play spar or stand in row and throw blocks, kick, and punch at command.
