Something horrible happen, to my cat and kittens yesterday. The Mother cat had two kittens and they are now 2months, but one has died because some cruel person torture it to death and left the body in my front yard, with knife wounds and blood all over the grass. Sadly the mother cat sawed her kitten dead on the ground with his eyes wide open and it looks like he was scared and in pain the whole time, even until his death. I am just worry that this won’t lead my cat to depression, and hopefully she can forget about it. So I want to know does cats have good memory?

Cats in general do have a good memory. However, they also have a unique ability to put something out of their mind. Animals do not know one day they will die. Yet, the understand that another animal is dead when they see it. They do not have the capacity to understand how the other animal died. In general, they think it fell victim to a predator of some kind. They see death and understand it. For example; I had two cats, one died in the animal hospital when she was 18. I brought the dead cat home so the younger one (who was about 4 years younger) could see her. The younger cat walked over to the dead one, sniffed her for a moment and walked away. She never looked for her and acted any differently. If the surviving animal sees the dead one, it will not wonder what happened to it. If for any reason you cat should act differently, just give it a lot of attention and love.

Sorry for your loss, windsofsorrow1198.

The knife wounds, may have been teeth punctures. If you want a cat as a pet. Don't let them outdoors. Cars, unfortunate poorly raised children and adults, dogs and wild animals are natural enemies of cats.

I had a juvenile delinquent rotten ugly mean rotten bully of a ignorant neighbor's kid(not a goat), shot(several times with a pellet gun, in the lungs, in the rear, even shot it as it was running away) a stray cat that came by my home occasionally. For a stray he was very friendly but refused to stay indoors when I offered him a home(the cat). He came up an laid on my lap as I sat on the patio that evening, I felt the blood running down my leg and I ran him to the vet. But the vet said it was to late to save him. He had ten pellets in his little body.

I thought many nights of how to get even(no to ruin this kids life) but all these 20 years later I still think of "TIGER" and constantly wish that kid the worse life's experiences one human could wish on another till the day that kid dies, a horribly long and painful death.

If cats(dogs and other pets and even wild animals) don't have a long memory(and I say "IF"), their human families do, a veryyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy lonnnnnnnnnnnnnnng memory.

Cats DO have good memories. The way they react to memories is different than humans. Animal memories are more functional and may lead to behavior changes. Your mama kitty will grieve her baby, no doubt, but instead of haunting her for the rest of her life, the memory will most likely lead her to be more secretive of her kittens in the future.

I'm sorry for you and your kitties. I hope you pursue criminal charges against the culprit, since animal cruelty resulting in death is a felony.

the answer is yes but before i read the gory details of your poor unfortunate feline , I'm not so sure . you see i thought you might have been wondering how a cat might find it's way home having perhaps unwittingly , been lost because I've heard of stories of cats finding their owners many miles away and often many years ago . but sadly this way off the track of your pet suffering trauma and i do hope sincerely that you can cope with it all as much as your cat --- pity the animals can't talk , although I'm sure if you are close enough to your pet you will understand it nonetheless.

Yes, like humans. Why are 2 monthed old kittens doing out? Did they sneak? Cats should stay in. Your house won't stink.
My sister left a few months ago, and my cat got very thin. She misses her regularly, but now I entertain her when she's bored.
And damn that person...another cat hater...

Listen. They remember the good things better than the bad. So. Do something nice to your cat. Just don't get it a pet hamster.

You bet they do. Call the law for animal cruelty to the kitten. Who ever did that to the kitten should be in jail.
