Try rubbing with vinegar and water (50/50) on a clean dry cloth.

Commercial cleaner such as 'oven clean' may be successful.

As a last resort purchase a sheet of 'Buffing grade' emery paper and use that.

If nothing works SUE the geek that ruined it.

Yes, there are many products on the market that will remove the black mark.

That isn't the answer though. The answer is to teach your son some responsibility. Leave it up to him to clean it...and tell him it is up to him to make it look new again. It will be up to him to find a product to either clean it...or purchase you the new iron.

He won't learn anything if you keep doing things like that for him, nor will it stop him from burning your next iron.

You can get a product from supermarkets (or possibly somewhere like John Lewis) for cleaning the sole plate of irons. The one I had was applied when the iron was hot, then simply wiped off. Very easy. I wish I could remember the name of it but if you ask in a shop they should be able to help you.

Did you try an abrasive cleaner? There is a product called "Goof". It comes in a small can. Or try lighter fluid (ON A COLD IRON). That is the same as the product "Goof". It works on alot of things. Have any idea what the black mark might be?
