It comes from the Latin requiescat in pace it from the Church 's prayer for the departed.

Requiem eternam dona eis Domine et lux perpetua luceat eis. Requiescant in pace. Amen

Eternal rest grant them O Lord and let perpetual light shine upon them. May they rest in peace. Amen.

It's used in the requiem mass among other occasions.

btw also the Jews pray for the departed.

"Rest In Peace", a phrase which often appears on tombstones. The expression comes originally from the Latin, requiescat in pace, and the English version is an example of backronym formation (although the two phrases mean roughly the same thing). Also, in Italian, it is said as "Riposi In Pace".

tombstones. in the old days, whatever era you whish to set this in, there was the belief that without a proper burial the soul would not rest in peace. In europe the dead and freshly buried might become a vampire. About the islands it was rumored that Samedi would claim the newly dead for his army of servants. Even in the Wild West era, people believed without having a priest to intern the dead the dead would plague the living because the living did not send them off to heaven properly. Writing Rest in Peace became shortened to RIP to basically seal the body in the grave and give condolences to the soul so that it might find itsway to heaven and truly rest in peace in godly embrace, as the earth was of satan's domain.

It comes from the old, but sorely missed practice of drawing & quartering an individual. As the horses would pull away from each other, the sound assocciated with the human body parting was RIP. It was such a fantastic sound that they decided to memorialize the practice by saying RIP whenever anyone died. We are working feveriously to bring back the practice to use on pedophiles. Stay tuned.

Actually, it may have been popularised by Ford. Translated as "Rust in Pieces" as befitted the 1960s "Dagenham Dustbin"
