Astronomically, it begins with the autumnal equinox (around September 23 in the Northern hemisphere, and March 21 in the southern hemisphere), and ends with the winter solstice (around December 21 in the Northern hemisphere and June 21 in the Southern hemisphere). However, meteorologists count the entire months of March, April and May in the Southern hemisphere, and September, October and November in the Northern hemisphere as autumn.

It all depends on where you are. According to Wikipedia, autumn is a trasition period from summer to winter. In the Northern Hemisphere, autumn is known as fall, and starts on September 3 and ends around December 21. In the Southern Hemisphere, autumn starts around March 21 and ends on June 21.

In Portugal people say the first day of August is the first day of winter. I think this is a bit much - especially as its almost 100 degrees again today and we are roasting! The only difference is in the evenings when you can now feel an autumnal breeze.

the precise date and time of the fall Equinox varies from year to year. it really is even as the sunlight strikes into the astrological signal of Aries and daylight hours time equals that of darkness, (indicating the starting up of Autumn). in conserving with annum, the date/time strikes gradually later in September until eventually the year before bounce-year is reached. On bounce-year, it returns to an before date/time. This 4-year cycle is then repeated. For 2006: twenty third Sept @ 04:03. Time is in UT (established Time); this replaced into referred to as Greenwich mean Time or GMT.
