I am curious: I know that in general Muslims consider Jews and Christians to be "People Of The Book", with some required respect for their religious beliefs. But what about members of what the west sees as the other branch of Islam?

Sunni: Are Shiite also "People Of The Book, or are they heretics?

Same for Shiite: Are Sunni also "People Of The Book", or are they heretics?

Is cooperation possible, between devout members of the two groups?

Sunnis and Shiits are all muslims, they differed between them after the death of prophet Mohammed. Sunni have great respect and valu for ALi bin Abu Talib (may allah bless him) and Shiite have great repsect to prophet Mohammed. Sunni & Shiit ar people of one book "Quran"
You people in the west are tying to seperate Muslims based on two casts, but you have seen what happended in Lebanon. The Hizboullah's are Shiite but major part of Sunnis & Sunni scholars who understand the Quran & prophet Mohammed's teahings supported them. So as we repect the other peopl eof book we also respect each other. If you ask any Shite or Sunni Imam they will tell you the same, only people who are weak in faith will make propblems based on small issues or ignorance.

Sunni
This is the name for the larger of the two major divisions of Islam. The Sunni, who rejected the claims of 'Ali's line, believe that they are the true followers of the sunna, the guide to proper behavior set forth by Muhammad's personal deeds and utterances.

Shiite Muslim
a member of the branch of Islam that regards Ali as the legitimate successor to Mohammed and rejects the first three caliphs.

Sunnis and Shiites are Muslims. people of the book means those who received a Divine text from god like ( psalms, Torah, gospel)
of course cooperation is possible between them!!
what you see in Iraq today is an American conspiracy to divide and conquer.
the US troops made an Alliance with Al Mahdi Army in Baghdad/Sadr city which is a Shiite militia, so the Sunnis considered them to be traitors and started killing them and the Shiites retaliated and so forth!!!
it's ALL political!!!

Nevertheless we are forbidden to break into sects and factions

"And hold fast, all together, by the rope which Allah (stretches out for you), and be not divided among yourselves; and remember with gratitude Allah's favour on you; for ye were enemies and He joined your hearts in love, so that by His Grace, ye became brethren; and ye were on the brink of the pit of Fire, and He saved you from it. Thus doth Allah make His Signs clear to you: That ye may be guided. "

I am a Muslim. Sunnis Shi'ites are much more closer to Judaism and Christianity because they have made the Old Testament and New Testament laws as mandatory part of their faith which are writen in their hadith books (Talmud).

Muhammad (pbuh) was not a pedifile he never slept with aisha (rauh) until she matured, it was an order from god for him to marry her, in terms of her age although sh was considered 11 however in the time of the arabs 11 was the age of a mature woman. so how can u classify such a pure man and humble woman as being a pediflie. please get ur facts right befor you comment.
