The amount of excess to be paid is not contingent on how much responsibility you bear. It is usually a fixed value that is decided on when you purchase your policy.

However, the amount of damage being claimed against and the excess amount might influence you to decide if you want to settle the matter privately. For example if your excess is $1000 and the damage caused by you is only $500, it does not make sense to allow the other party to claim against your policy.

Additional info:
As I have stated, your insurance excess is fixed.

Let's create a scenario. You are driving a private car with 1st party insurance and your insurance excess is $1000. You are involved in an accident with a taxi and both are 50/50 at fault. The damage to the taxi is $200 and your damage is $500.

Your insurance company will repair your car in full and pay the taxi driver $100 in compensation since the damage is $200 and your fault is 50%. Your company will also claim $250 from the taxi driver for your repairs. However, you have to pay the excess of $1000, regardless of the actual costs of repairs to your car and compensation to the other driver, once a claim is made by you or against you.

Thus, I have pointed out that it might be more economical to settle privately, which may not be possible if the collision is with a taxi since their procedures does not appear to allow for private settlement.
