There is only one God in Vodou. He is called Bondye or Good God. The deities you are referring to are not deities at all. They are elevated spirits that help us since Bondye is so distant from us. They are not demons as Christians see them. They are more associated with saints in the catholic religion. It is considered a blessing to be ridden by the lwa. Possesion is voluntary and if you don't want it, it will not happen.

In case you have not realized I practice Vodou. Here is a websites that explains the religion. http://sosyetedumarche.com/Vodou_Info/vodou_info.html

nope not demons...they're lwas or luas depending on who you speak to or where you read it.

One really needs an open mind to understand their complex religion. Imagine Catholic with all its saints and such mixed with a little mysticism.
An quick and easy way to reference it is to think of the lwas as gods. Not comfortable with that description, try minigods, demigods, spirits with more power than you, entities that venerate the world around them.

Whatever you want to look at it as, if you believe the description of demon is vile and evil, that's not what a lwa is, so in that essence they are not demons.

In their religion, being possessed by one of the lwas is a blessing. it means they favor you and blessings will come to you from them. But then again...if you think about it the spirit of the lord posses others with the speaking in tongues and faith healing. It's all the same, just the voudouns have specified a ;little more definition to it instead of leaving it vague.

I don't even know what 'demon' means, but Vodun gods are every bit as divine as the one I presume you have - to followers of Vodun or Yoruba or Santeria, there are many gods out there and, yes, bodily possession is one ability that they have.

As for 'demons'... well, ı don't believe in any of it myself, so I guess you can interpret it however you want.

People invite these demonic figments of their imagined superstition. When they come to to people's minds you call them demon possessed, i say they've got a mental imbalance.
