and how it discriminated against women. For all those who said it didn't, read 'Never without my daughter' from Betty Mahmoody. I saw that some of you quoted the Quran but it also written there that women are not worthy of trust. A woman who has been raped has to provide 4 male witnesses of the rape so that she can obtain justice or she might be stoned to death. Women in Saudi Arabia don't even have the right to vote or drive a car. Female Genital Mutilation is practiced in many islamic countries and if allowing polygamy is not discrimination, then what is it?

Really Sorry, but your RELIGION does mean the Quran, and there are quite a few discriminating things written in there.

I am not saying that other religions do not discriminate against women, they all do.
And women in Saudi do NOT have the right to drive.

If you feel that the only purpose of women in this world is to hide themselves behind veils to retain their 'purity', then you are quite mistaken. This is not called equality. I have not mentioned the veil in my question as i do have friends who wear it but are quite liberal.

It is true that Islam like many other religions discriminate against women. Hiding behind veils and being the fourth or third wife of someone is no woman's idea of equality. And in many cases, the woman is not given a choice, she is forced by her family or society to do it. So even if people claim these women do it out of their free will, they are actually pressurised.

Ok, first of all you need to differentiate between the teachings of Islam and the law of the countries at question.
- Saudi Arabia is the only country where women do not drive, why did you disregard the other islamic countries? women do drive there. It is a Saudi tradition or social norm not based on religion, hope this is clear now.
- Stoning, again you are talking about Saudi Arabia. Any person found guilty of adultery is stoned whether male or female. There is no discrimination here.
- Quran does not say women are not worthy of trust, it simply says that women are more emotional than men and that is why a man has double the credibility infront of a court of law.
- Raped woman - witnesses - where did you get that from? No, it does not take 4 witnesses to prove it, what is your source??
- Female circumcision is practiced in a number of countries, but it is not an islamic ritual nor is it a requirment. It is an african tradition and you will find it occurs more in african countries such as Sudan. If it exists in other countries it is based on the family's values not on religion.
- Polygamy is allowed by Islam, a man can marry up to 4 wives. Islam however clearly stipulates that a man has to treat his wives equally and if the man can't do that, then he should not marry more than one.
One important aspect that you need to take into consideration is that you have western values. You believe those values are right, just like you believe your religion is right. You have to experience life on the other side to understand & comprehend its people & culture. Try avoiding falling into the trap of juding people according to your own norms and values.
One final note, there are tons of books out there and references that contain false information about Islam, make sure your verify the sources before making any conclusions.
Hope the above helps.
Regards

I agree with Southern Man - you are confusing religion and her Islam with custom / tradition / law they are not one and the same.
You might be interested to know the Qoran is very similar to the old testament adam and eve, jesus as a profit etc.
There is nothing in the religion of Islam that says a woman cannot drive or has to wear a viel or must have 4 witnesses to a rape this is all cultural and political to certain countries.
I am sure Never without my daughter is a great book but it is one persons account of an experience sure there are more like it but humans do awful things not religions - consider this man in Austria that kept the young girl locked up in the basement for 8 years.......what was his religion? We dont know becuase its not relevant; he did a truly awful thing it doesn't matter which god he prays to.
by the way i am not muslim or christian

This doesn't exactly address your question, but it's related, nonetheless. I'm not a fan of religion, but you might want to keep in mind that women have traditionally been stepped on throughout the course of most of history. The New Testament (specifically the work of Paul) has all sorts of rules regarding the proper subservience of women, from head-coverings, to not being allowed to speak in the company of men, to that whole Obey-Your-Husband-Because-He's-Your-Boss thing. Thankfully, Christianity doesn't advocate some of the more extreme practices against women that other religions do, but I just wanted to point out the fact that Islam isn't the only one with an agenda against the fairer side of our species.

Thank you for asking this question. First of all, we should differentiate between Islam, and Muslims' behaviors. All what you have mentioned before is not true in Islam as a religion, but may be as customs or culture.
Women are trust worthy, that's for sure in Islam, Prophet of Islam says : Heaven is at the feet of mothers.... also he urged us to be obedient to our parents...especially mom. So, if women are not trust worthy how it comes phosphate Mohammad urges Muslims to obey moms.
A woman who has been raped HAS NOT to provide 4 male witnesses. She can report to any police station, and she will be examined by a female doctor to prove her claim, in case of condemned the guy is imprisoned for 15 years.

A raped woman is a victim that must be treated with honor and kindness. She is not required to produce four witnesses to prove the crime done against her, nor is she punished for the crime done against her.
In his response to your question, Sheikh Ahmad Kutty, a senior lecturer and Islamic scholar at the Islamic Institute of Toronto, Ontario, Canada, states:
If a person makes an allegation of adultery against another person (male or female) he or she must produce four witnesses to support such an allegation; otherwise, he or she is guilty of slandering, which is a grave offense in Islam, for we are not to tarnish the honor of anyone.
A woman who has been raped cannot be asked to produce witnesses; her claim shall be accepted unless there are tangible grounds to prove otherwise. To insist that she provide witnesses is akin to inflicting further pain on her. If anyone refutes her claim of innocence, the onus is on him to provide evidence, and she may simply deny the claim by making a solemn oath, thus clearing herself in public. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “The onus to provide evidence falls on the one who makes a claim, and the one who denies (the same) can absolve himself or herself by making a solemn oath to the contrary
Muslim women are not allowed to drive: Again this is not Islamic law but rather a local tradition in some of these so called "Islamic" countries. Quran has no restriction on the women moving freely in the society, whether this includes riding a horse, driving a car or flying an aeroplane.
