Actually there is no apparent purpose or apparent evolutionary purpose for the dogs leg movement when it is scratched.
No dog is exactly alike!

You are hitting a nerve in the dog, it is like when the doctor hits our knees say with that little hammer. Serves no purpose at all except that when a dog owner finds it they think it funny and they have accomplished something miraculous.
Most spots are really the same, just depends on how the person manages to hit it. Experience, just like the doctor hitting your nerve in your knee. It is only to see your sensory reactions.
No accomplishment really, just basic science, they are no geniuses.

the only purpose I can think of is to provide us humans with laughter which in turn makes for happy people who take good care of their dogs ehnce the evolutionary purpose is that dogs lead happier lives cuz their happy people take good care of them, survival thru manipulation in a weird kinda way hehehe

I'll agree with Loxe on this, but not (quite) everything has an evolutionarily adaptive explanation. What is the point of your reflex when the doc taps your knee?

its leg is moving as if it were scratching the itch, itself. Therefore in evolution an itch would trigger the dog to use that leg to scratch.
