Yes, that's a greeting, krab is for men to say. Women say ka.

That is all you need to know as most Thai people speak English. However to say thank you is a courtesy (Kop-komKar) for a man (Kop-Komkap) for a woman) and remember the lower you bow, the higher the person. i.e. a local businessman you respect would get a bow of the head, a royalty you would bow from the waist. and remember NEVER NEVER touch the head or point with the finger (thumb is accepted) but also never never put your feet on a table

Contrary to what others have told you... Most Thais do not speak english... I lived there for 10 years and speak fluent Thai. I will say that more are learning english every day.
