He was accused by the Jewish leaders of blasphemy, claiming to be God, which He did, because He was telling the truth. The Romans put Him death because Pilate was on the "hot seat" so to speak with Caesar. He could not afford another insurrection. The Jewish leaders convinced him that Jesus, when claiming to be a king, was guilty of wanting to overthrow the Roman government.

During the Sanhedrin Trial of Jesus, the high priests and elders asked Jesus, "Are you the Son of God?", and upon his reply of "You say that I am", condemned Jesus for blasphemy (Luke 22:70–71). The high priests then turned him over to the Roman Prefect Pontius Pilate, based on an accusation of sedition for claiming to be King of the Jews.
