A marine corps is a branch of a nation's armed forces incorporating Marines, intended to be capable of mounting amphibious assaults using infantry, armour, aircraft, and watercraft. The role of a Marine Corps can differ between nations. Many countries, including Spain, Germany, France and Russia describe these combatant groups as "naval infantry."
In modern warfare, Marines are usually elite, highly mobile troops, and are used in situations that do not always involve naval elements. For example, the United States Marine Corps, the largest in the world, is often used as a spearhead for major military offensives or as a stopgap when an emergency military situation breaks out, performing critical military operations until more permanent forces arrive. Historically, Marines were part of the navy and served onboard warships. They assisted the crew in battles, boarded enemy ships, conducted small coastal raids, and protected the officers from mutiny by the crew. Eventually they have become the primary landing force. The word "Marine" means Navy in many European languages such as French, German and Dutch.

First to glock, it is a fouled anchor…and if you think WM will get you slapped try BAM!
And I am sure you meant the famed Recon Rangers.
Konala is correct, there is no such thing as an ex-Marine! However Boot is a 16 week respite from your sloppy civilian life. Beginning with, “From this moment on the first and last word out of your sewer will be sir”, to the boot camp lieutenant’s question during arms inspection “Private, what was the president’s name in 1996?”…Don’t bother to answer, just fall to the ground, bury your rifle in the sand and start doing push-ups!
And the recruiter that Promised you Aviation or computer technology, Lied to you! But I will promise that you Will Be A GRUNT! And that is Not a bad thing!
To Nelli and mslider2, to generic.
To konala and MAC…Exceptional! Semper Fi!
To all the rest…if they carried a ladder to the highest peak of the highest mountain and stood atop that ladder they still could not lick a Marines ___ feet!

Well, lets begin with once a Marine always a Marine. The first couple of weeks in Marine Corp Boot Camp, you are involved in what is called Marine corp indoctrination. (AKA brainwashing by NON-Marines). A big chunk of your day is study of Marine corp history, attack formation and strategy etc. Then comes drill (marching). drill serves two purposes, 1st it is to get the Marine use to following orders instantly without question, 2ND it is the get the unit (by definition) to work as one.
Once in the fleet Marines you are exposed to military life (Marine Corp life). You are always on duty and must conduct yourself accordingly. If you live off base, you can not live in a bad part of town. Most of your friends are fellow Marines and you live a military lifestyle.
One piece of trivia: Why does the Drill instructor on board Paris Island make a recruit find and bury a sand flea the recruit killed?
Answer: In wartime if you slap a bug that was biting you, the sound of the slap could give away the position of your platoon, squad etc.

I've worked along side them in countries where getting injured by an IED was normal. I would have to say the ones I've worked with would have died for me. Most are extremely loyal. That took me by surprised because my first impression was most were stupid and ego-centric. I'm sure there are some out there that fit that label, but you don't need to be in the Marine Corp to do so either.
