I understand your confusion, since balsamic has become popular with the "with-it" set (ha ha), some supermarkets (like LIDL) have put out cheap versions that are basically just red wine vinegar.
Balsamic vinegar is aged in wooden casks, just like wine, until it becomes dark in colour (almost black) and slightly thick. The flavour is less acid and more aromatic. Flavours vary depending on the type of cask used and the amount of time in the aging process.
Real balsamic vinegar comes from Modena in Italy; the cheap one I bought also supposedly comes from there but at less than 1 Euro a bottle, I doubt it. Good balsamic vinegar is rather expensive for the quantity you buy.

Two completely different types of vinegars. Red vine vinegar is a little sweeter whereas balsamic vinegar is very bitter. They are both used in salads, but balsamic is used with oil traditionally, while red wine vinegar is typically a Mediterranean dressing.

The difference lies in a chemical process whilst producing it. You can tell by the colour, balsamic is brown and stronger of taste. red wine vinigar is more sour en less 'aged' than balsamic.
