i heard about this on the radio and id like to find out more.
i think it would add so much to a visit to a foreign country, and if it benefitted local people rather than greedy middle class westerners with shares in travel companies...so much the better.

I usually travel using a guide book: specifically Lonely Planet. These guide books are pretty good at making recommendations about homestays. You could also check the thorne tree at lonely planet web site to see if anyone is offering; however, it is probably safer to go with a recommendation if you are staying alone.

The Big Issue has ads in the back with stuff of that nature, you could try that and help some one out at the same time by buying the mag.

Some countries (like New Zealand, Australia) offer a scheme called Willing Workers On Organic Farms (WWOOF).
Means you can stay with them, eat with them and learn a bit of culture.
You do actually have to do work for them though!! ;-)
