It doesn't make much sense to me. People in those times used religion as a way to apply meaning to the mysterious world around them, so why--with all of our knowledge do people still take advice from a group of people who wouldn't even know how to operate a toaster?
Not saying, they are "nice" things to read--but why take it so literally? Any thoughts?

Amy---I looked at that "proof" site and it did not impress me...it seems like they are reaching in many of their explanations...and there are no references to particular studies (regarding the Islamic slaughtering method, for instance). I just don't buy it, sorry?! What do others think? Click on her links....

Well, people *still* use religion to "apply meaning to the mysterious world around them."

Maybe we have more technology and knowledge, but life is still fundamentally beyond our control or understanding. Making the Bible or Koran into "life's instruction book" simply makes a lot of people feel better in an existence where things can happen that they can't control or understand.

Of course, it doesn't give them any more control or understanding than before, but it is a security blanket for them. That's why they react so violently (verbally and/or physically) whenever those comforting beliefs are challenged.

Yes, I have had to work through this myself. It comes down to one simple question. "What is truth?" or "What is true?"

And where do you find this truth?

It expands into "what is our purpose and meaning," and even "why did God create us."

I read and study more than most, and have put together a couple of essays that answer these questions from some of the most profound thinkers of all time.

One is called simply "Essay" and the other is "Finding Truth." Please read these two essays at the link given. If you can get through the first two pages of definitions, you will be rewarded in the next two pages. I think most of our confusion is because we don't define our terms, so this is very clear and specific and easy to follow. Not necessarily easy to understand, but as close as you may find. I'm still waiting for someone to try and refute it or do better at explaining these complex subjects.

In a quick note honey the Bible is the Basic Instructions Before Leaving Earth. I personally was dead spiritually without God's word in my life I was suicidal and went through so much before I finally came to the realization that I needed God in my life now I'm telling u about a girl who hated God I mean I got into all kinds of madness buy by the grace of God I didn't end up dead and in hell that was my biggest fear to go to hell ya this life is one thing but where would my soul go after? that was my biggest question and now I know the Bible says that to be absent from the body is to be present with Christ that fast once u blink your soul is gone that fast there is no other way for me because even when I didn't love him he still loved me and died for my sins past present and future that is the kinda God I serve, not because I have to but because I want to .

agree with u. people generally pick out verses from Holy books that says kill ans slay, but no one bothers to take a look at words that say -- observe ur duties to God and His creatures. it is so easy esp now-a-days to insult someone using out of context verses.

but people never go a couple of extra steps to read the verses next to those cited. and they call themselves right and expert on opinions. and most of these quotes come from anti-religious sites, where they bash each other literally.

heard of the game WHISPERING WORDS? (where people form circles and words are spoken in someone's ears and u know what is the final sentence, much different from the original one.) the same applies here.

why dont people do favour to themselves and to the world. -- get urself the original copy of Torah/ Gita/Bible/Quran /Hadith/Any Holy Book and then compare it to those cited in the anti-religious sites, u will see the difference urself.

If you could buy a book that could foretell the future thousands of years in advance, if you could buy the most popular book ever written, if you could buy a copy of the first book ever written, if you could buy a book that told you how to farm, how to have faith, how to live and not die, how to love and not hate, how to be healed and not be lame, wouldn't that not only be a book worth buying, but worth reading, studying and learning? You could also think of it as a picture album of the Son of God. The thing is if I showed you a picture album of my son and you were disinterested, I would stop showing you the pictures. That is the same way with the Word of God. If you are not interested, God will not show you the pictures of His son. Just getting through The Book to say you read it, will not impress Him. It will not please Him. Looking for His Son will please Him. And He will show you His Son.

Well if you were to read the Bible, youd find proof that its basically an outline of mankind. And by living life day by day following the bible you are pleasing god.

If you were to look in the bible right now, and read the book of James i can guarantee your whole life will be turned upside down by tomorrow morning.(if you choose to live by gods wod.)

Without love you are nothing at all. In life, there are times when you find that there is "No not one" person on this earth who is always there for you. You find that when you read God's words that He is always here and loves you more than anyone could. He gave His Son for you, that is how much he loves you. The Bible is my beginning every day. Without it, I could not survive, epically when I find out that my so is doing drugs.
Thanks for your information on drugs. All of the symptoms are there and boy does it hurt. I know what the next step is for me toward him and this will be the hardest thing ever. Even harder that when I had to divorce his dad for the same problem. Thanks again.

Because the Bible is the Word of God and its the Living Truth?

Go read it when you're bored, BEST if you're at dire straits... then you'll see that some verses do speak to you.
And mind you its not the sentences thats 'speaking' to you, God is.

Sounds spooky?

Not yet, try praying for thing in the name of Jesus, and it'll come to past. NOW that's freaky for u!
