MANNY PACQUIAO
PROFILE AND BIO

At 26 years old, Manny Pacquiao has been fighting as a pro for over 10 years.

"Quite simply, Pacquiao is one of the hottest fighters in the business. There is a saying in American boxing: 'Speed kills,' When that speed is accompanied by power, it is truly a formidable combination - and Pacquiao has it." - Graham Houston, Boxing Monthly.

Boxing columnist, Michael Katz wrote, "He ran away from the corn and rice fields at the age of 12 because his mother didn't want him to box. So he hustled at pool, conned a few kids at basketball, and turned pro right after his 16th birthday as a junior flyweight. Now he is on the cusp of becoming perhaps the greatest Asian fighter to conquer the West since Genghis Khan."

John Whistler of the San Antonio Express-News reported from ringside, "Never has a fighter physically dominated the classy Barrera the way Pacquiao did, so convincingly and thoroughly that by the middle of the 11th round, the only question that remained was whether or not the game but beaten Barrera would finish the fight. He couldn't."

Dan Rafael of USA Today wrote, "Pacquaio, the reigning junior featherweight champ moving up in weight, administered a one-sided beating to Barrera, considered one of the top fighters in the world pound-for-pound. Using superior speed and power,, Pacquiao...ravaged him with a two fisted attack..."

One of the hardest punching fighters of his generation; Manny is alos one of the most passionatley supported current professionals too.

With victories over Morales and Barrera he has achieved enough already to secure his standing as an all-time great and it apppears he still has the will and energy to prove more with a third Morales contest in the pipleine.

Frenetic and overwhelming; Pacman, as he's nicknamed is a relentless, pressure fighter with power in both hands and blistering hand speed.

Mexican Juan Manuel Marquez managed to recover from three knockdowns to secure a draw with him but Pac is established amongst most observers as one of the top ten fighters at any weight currently fighting.

His less celebrated brother, Bobby, is also a professional boxer.

The "Pride of Pinoy" or "Pacman, the Destroyer"...a left-handed super featherweight champion (WBC) with bigs wins over Barrera and Morales ...an exceptionally tough fighter, who, in his last KO win over Morales, may have shed the "robotic" or "one-dimensional" label that has dogged him. In the Philippines he is also a TV star, recording star, movie icon...he is fast and very hard punching but I still feel a multi-dimensional fighter can beat him. Don't let Manny get to you early, he's invincible if he gets an early lead...counter his Right jab and overhand lefts, work his body and head in unpredictable ways, he can lose. Morales easily outpointed him in their 1st meeting; this will be their 3rd upcoming...Nov. 18

Emmanuel "Manny" D. Pacquiao, born December 17, 1978) at General Santos City, South Cotabato, aka "Pacman," "The Destroyer" and sometimes referred to in the Philippines as ang Pambansang Kamao ("the National Fist") is the reigning World Boxing Council (WBC) International Super Featherweight Champion (since 2005), former The Ring People's Featherweight Champion (2003-2005), former IBF Super Bantamweight Champion (2001-2004), and former WBC Flyweight Champion (1998-1999). He has a record of 42 wins, 3 losses, and 2 draws, with 33 wins coming by way of knockout.

Pacquiao Pacman started his professional boxing career in 1995 at 106 pounds. His early fights were usually in small venues and were shown on Vintage Sports' evening boxing show Blow by Blow. He became an instant star of the program. He jumped in weight from 106 to 113 pounds before losing in his 12th bout against Sogo Guingue via a third round technical knockout (TKO), although on replays, it was clear that Pacquiao had been stopped by a low blow. During the fight as it was commentated by well known sports newscaster Quinito Henson, Pacquiao clearly did not make the weight so he was forced to use heavier gloves than that of Torrecampo which served as a disadvantage.[citation needed] Shortly after the Torrecampo fight Pacquiao settled in at 112 pounds, winning the WBC Flyweight title over Chatchai Sasakul only to lose it in his second defense against Medgoen Singsurat, or Medgoen 3K Battery, via a third round knockout on a bout held at Nakhon Si Thammarat, Thailand. Technically speaking, Pacquiao lost the belt at the scales by surpassing the required weight of 112 lb (51 kg).

Following the loss to Singsurat, Pacquiao again jumped in weight, this time stopping at the Super bantamweight division of 122 lb (55 kg) where he picked up the WBC International Super Bantamweight title, defending it five times before his next world title fight came. Pacquiao’s big break came on June 23rd, 2001, against IBF Super Bantamweight champion Lehlohonolo Ledwaba. Pacquiao stepped into the fight as a late replacement and walked out of the fight the newly crowned IBF Super Bantamweight champion on a bout held at MGM Grand, Las Vegas, Nevada.

Manny Pacquiao is now one of the most visible figures among his people and is considered a household name thanks to his multiple product endorsements and frequent appearances in the media.

A biographical movie based on his life has been produced and was released on June 21, 2006. The movie is titled Pacquiao: The Movie featuring Filipino actor Jericho Rosales as Manny Pacquiao and is directed by Joel Lamangan [6]. The movie bombed, though. Pacquiao himself acted in a few locally-produced movies.

Shortly after winning his rematch with Erik Morales, Pacquiao produced the song "Para Sa 'Yo" (Filipino: "For You") which became a hit single all over the Philippines. It expressed a nationalistic theme as well as Pacquiao's struggles in the ring. The release of the song came weeks before his second bout with Morales, leading up to the promos to the fight. While not a great singer by professional standards, Pacquiao's victory greatly contributed to the song's popularity.

During her 6th State of the Nation Address (SONA) on July 24, 2006 in Quezon City, Philippine President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo cited Pacquiao as one of the nation's modern day heroes. "Mabuhay ka, Manny," said Arroyo [7].

Ironically the champion delivered his own speech endorsing Arroyo. "the President said many good things in the SONA," Pacquiao remarked [8].
