It's not really the calcium. The calcium (or aluminum) comes attached to two hydroxide (oxygen hydrogen) molecules. Once in the stomach they separate (disassociate). The OH- (base) combine with the H+ (acid) to form water molecules.

Read the active ingredients on the medicine. Many antacids have a form of aluminum in them that help get rid of gas that causes discomfort. Take a drug interaction class if you really want to know.

Calcium is an alkali which cancels acid,the same as caustic soda neutralises acids.acids and alkali's are opposits.And its the acid from your stomach that causes heartburn.
