If you are referring to the Titanic, that ship was called unsinkable because - at the time - no one believed that it could or that it would sink-!! There were MANY factors that happened in order for it to actually go down.......not enough life boats were there to save everyone, going at maximum speed through waters with icebergs, the radio operator of a nearby ship turning off the radio and going to sleep, the Titanic sending up white (celebration) flares instead of red (distress) flares. If they had hit the iceberg straight-on, it would have been a big impact, but it would not have torn apart the whole side-! In all, no one believed that there was any danger (hence - unsinkable) until it was far too late-!!

Because often'times people refuse to face the truth until it smacks them in the face......or until the water is lapping at their feet, as it were.
If you're referring to the Titanic, though, I would imagine that all the people who said she couldn't sink genuinely believed that. It's hard to imagine such a massive hoopla now over a regular ole' ocean liner, but the Titanic was the cream of the sea-faring world, and almost everyone truly believed she was invincible.
It's kind of sad that she never even got to finish her maiden voyage.

If you are referring to the Titanic her designers didn't conceive of two bulkheads being breached at once.
