i'm not sure whether or not it's the key fob that's not working, or something in my car (wires or cables or something) that aren't connected that is causing the key fob to not work. (i did try new batteries too!)

Key less entry transmitter FOB are around 90 dollars each if you take your old fob to Nissan they might test it for you free ask at the parts desk say "I will buy a new one if this one will not light up the lights on your key less entry tester."
TRY THIS FIRST Program new part or old part
#1 sit in car lock doors with door switch #2 insert all the way and remove the key 6 times in ten seconds don't rush #3 turnsignals will flash twice. #4 quickly put key in and turn key to run posistion not crank #5 push any remote's button if the car hears the radio signal it will flash the turnsignals twice. #6 if there are more key fobs Unlock and relock door switch and push button on another remote #7 repete #6 for each fob up to five can be done.

I had & still have the same problem. Dealership wanted to charge me $160 to fix the remote. Needless to say, I never got it fixed. Tried several new batteries.as well and nothing. EBay sells thecremites as low as $11 with free shipping.

get new key fobs off ebay for like 20 bucks and install the simple wire to your current security/keyless entry system

That sounds like a question you should ask a car dealership, but I hear as much as $100.
