There are several reasons for this. Foremost, many people are either too lazy, too uninformed, or a combination of both when it comes to finding services. Instead of looking in a phone book or calling information for a non-emergency service, they just dial the 'magi number" for help. (The lazy ones get offended when told they are in the wrong place). Then, there are the abusers- people who think that they have the right to demand any service they want or need from the public. These are very often welfare-oriented, societal leaches. Next, you have the drunks and druggies who don't have enough physical dexterity left to dial more than 3 numbers (these are often abusers, anyway). Finally, you have the people who are stressed, fearful, or harried and cannot think of any other solution at the moment. Sometimes you can pity them, unlike many of the others listed here. There is a serious lack of public education about the proper use of 911, which also contributes to misuse and abuse. Thank you for asking!

I have been a firefighter in South Africa for 25 years. For the past 9 years I am a suoerviser in a call centre similar to your 911 centre. I wish I knew the andswer to yous question. We receive many hoax calls and while we send soeone to attend to these caals we have people really in need of help but have our resources tanding off at false alarms.
They should get these hoax callers and let them spend some time in trauma units and call centre so they can see what it really involves.
Thanks for your concern
Regards from a sunny South Africa.

I wish I knew. I am a nurse in the Emergency room. And we have had people come in for some really stupid, time wasting things. Like splinters in there fingers, or a small cut that a ban-aid would fix. I guess some people just have nothing better to do.

Some people test to see if 911 works on their cellphone in case of an emergency ( ... )
In a crisis, people will panic and not use their common sense
Children might accidently dial it
Some people are not educated ?

Some people will call 911 to get a ride across town! They get an ambulence to come to their house and get a free ride to the hospital then they say they are okay and leave.

Mine. even as i change into 5 or 6 years previous, I stated as 911 because my mom had hit me quite complicated that day because it change into diverse from different circumstances she did. My guess now's that I did something quite out of line. nicely I stated as 911 because i presumed she had abused me. Lmao. stupid toddler. imagine the a*s kicking i'd get when I were given older and nonetheless am getting now.

I know a 911 dispatcher, she tells me about all sorts of stupid calls she gets.
- What time are the fireworks on July 4?
- What time is it?
- How are the roads between ____ and ____?
The list goes on and on.
I think it's just not enough education on what 911 is for.

There are people that think that is the ONLY way to call police and will use it for nonemergency messages such as a cat in a tree, a lost dog, or a neighbor with a stero on too loud.

I don't recommend calling 911 because the police will probably want to do a cavity search when they arrive.
Trust me It's not pleasant.
I wouldn't want anyone to go through an abusive police rectal search.

Your emergency, and someone elses emergency may differ! We can let 911 sort that out, not us!
