We all know Apu Nahasapeemapetilon from the Simpsons. My question is does Apu mean something or is it just a hindu first name?

Also, are most indians aware of him? If you are, do you think he's an embarrassment to your culture or plugs it, or is just funny?

Answer whether you are answering from India or US.

Apu Trilogy :
Apu Nahasapeemapetilon, is a fictional character. He is the proprietor of the Kwik-E-Mart the local convenience store. An immigrant from India, he is, like most Simpsons characters, a caricature of a common stereotype—in his case, that of the South Asian convenience-store owner. His indefatigable immigrant work-ethic. His catchphrase is "Thank you, come again!"—cheerfully and dutifully repeated to customers after each transaction. His first name is an homage to the main character in the "Apu Trilogy" directed by Satyajit Ray. His surname, Nahasapeemapetilon, is a of a schoolmate of Simpsons.

Apu is really an Indian word. But the Nahasapeemapetilon is an embarrassment to all migrant Indians because this surname doesn't exist. The suffix 'tilon' has a western sound to it and I suspect it is added onto an original Indian surname to give viewers the impression that Apu isn't proud to be an Indian national and wishes to assimilate into a western culture.

I'm not from India or US. But I hail from a place where I interact with many Indians and I have many many Indian friends.
