Black people fought a long battle for civil rights in this country, so why is that people are fleeing Mexico for a better life instead of fighting the government there for better jobs and wages, etc?

Blacks for a long time did not have a political voice in the USA. Research your history; we were hosed with fire hoses, lynched and even brutally murdered for even trying to do something as simple as vote. The only reason why Mexicans have a politcal voice in this country is because we as black people paved the way for them, and that is a good thing!! If the citizens of Mexico want a better life in thier country bad enough, they'll fight for it!

to la dolce vita.

Not to be a smartass, but again read your history. Black people had the same problems that exist in Mexico (little money, poor education, etc) but we pulled together and fought for what was rightfully due to us.

I find some of the responses here utterly appalling in their ignorance. Blacks had no money, no respect and no political voice, but with nothing more than the help of a great leader, Martin Luther King, they overcame.

Mexicans in Mexico may have none of the above, but still have more to start an uprising than blacks did in Martin Luther King's day, for blacks were also once slaves in the very land they were now fighting for their rights in.

If Illegal immigrants want to compare themselves and their struggles to the plight of the African American in our country, they can't. That comparison can only be made if they stay in their own country and fight for their rights there.

Mexico is the country they need to have an uprising in to change it. Their fight is with their government not with ours.

What Mexico needs is reform. And, I don't think reform will come easy, either. Question is, is there anything we can do to help at all, or is this something they're going to pretty much have to do all by themselves? My opinion is, if they can build resorts, why can't they build the other things that would really help their economy etc? Stores, churches, roads, schools, hospitals, police stations, warehouses, homes, these things are the building blocks of prosperity...or, or, do they have them already and they're just trying to sell us a sob story?

Apparently there is no one credible to fight against. Too bad all the good people of that country dont stand up to the government. I know family that lives really close to the border and the stories I hear are horrible. There are so many gangs just roaming the streets freely fighting for territory. The people are afraid.

From my standpoint, Mexicans are cowards. Blacks fought like hell and many were killed. They didn't run to Mexico or Canada but had the fortitude to fight for change. Blacks were just as oppressed as Mexicans, so I really don't want to hear about the Mexican government.

That is a good question. I don't think they think they can do anything about it. Why doesn't the united states do something to help them? Since we're obviously soooo good at helping!
Mexicans have done a lot for the united states. I don't understand why everyone has to be so pissy about immigrants. Does it make you feel important to have a hateful opinion? Shouldn't we care about all the people of the world? What ever happened to peace, people?! Peace isn't just a word that describes a time without a war. It describes a world that is tolerant and understanding and loving to all it's people. Why do we all have to be so pissed off??!!!

You are correct. Civil rights was a just cause. It made it possible for everyone to have equal rights, regardless of skin color. That is a great point in the history of America and great leaders like MLK, Rosa Parks and Malcolm X made it possible. They were true leaders and articulate in that strong message.

Illegal aliens actually broke the law and are trying to say this is a comparison. I am sorry, they seriously need to stop with that comparison and get smacked upside the head for even attempting it.

As far as the comparison to blacks, where were they supposed to flee to? Africa? This was their home; this was were their family was.

Mexicans, from the ones I have talked with, feel they have no political voice or power in Mexico. Here, they feel they have at least that. Also, many illegals have legal friends and family here, and I know several that feel the U.S. is more "home" than anywhere else, despite their undocumented status.

Despite them also yelling how proud to be mexican they are, they actually care nothing for their own country. It would take some work to make their country into anything, far easier to be leeches here.

not to be a smartass, but how do you THINK they would be able to just fight for their rights? How can they with little money, little education, little resources, and NO power whatsoever, to do so?

in response to your detail: Yes. That is true, however they did that in the US. The US and Mexico have two extremely different types of governments, even back then. I'm not saying its impossible to go from nothing to something great, because it is, however thats a dream only really found here (American dream.)

And while I agree, blacks had it really bad, I do know my history, they were not an entire nation living in poverty.
