An Apostle is a special witness of Christ. The 12 original Apostles were chosen by Jesus from among his disciples.

And it came to pass in those days, that he went out into a mountain to pray, and continued all night in prayer to God.
And when it was day, he called unto him his disciples: and of them he chose twelve, whom also he named apostles

Biblically speaking, an Apostle is one specifically chosen for that office by God. They had a personal encounter with Christ (Paul is considered the 13th apostle). The office of apostle ended with the death of John, the last surviving apostle.

A disciple is a learner, someone who studies the Scriptures and seeks to follow Christ. All true believers, past, present and future, may be considered disciples.

Jesus had 12 apostles.... these were men chosen from all the disciples, Jesus had hundreds of disciples that followed him (disciple meaning student or learner) Apostles were the ones chosen from them to learn directly under his tutalidge and to carry on his message after he had given himself on the cross, they in effect were the first church leaders in Christianity

The apostles were the ones who saw Jesus after his rising from the dead. The disciples were the ones who walked and learned from him before the crucifixion. They can be the same people.

Actually the difference is in the source language, Greek. (Koine or Biblical Greek to be exact.) Apostle means one who is sent with a message. Disciple means learner.
