If you are in the uk there is a big disadvantage- they are actually illegal because all your lights go out when you stop.

Secondly there are numerous lcd lights on the market that run for up to 150 hours on a set of aaa batteries, cost about £4. They are more effective and efficient than dynamo lights.

The benefits are:
1. No batteries to run out and be disposed of or recharged. It is amazing how they always run out just when you really need them.
2. If you get a hub dynamo the effect on the bike speed is very very small and it don't get stolen.
3. You never forget it. I get caught out staying late at work and it being dark. I don't want to carry a set of battery lights everywhere.
4. A dynamo and lights don't get stolen as easily as battery lights which are mostly designed for easy removal. I often forget to take battery lights off when in a hurry.

There are downsides of course. The weight is a bit more, they cost more initially and, unless they are an expensive set, when you stop moving they go out.

As compared to battery light, it is less expensive though it will affect the front tire a little bit. Using a dynamo light it will prevent you run-out the light, while using battery you might have your battery exhausted during the travel in the night. A dynamo light look more classy and elegant.

There isn't really. With the small weight of batteries and newer light assemblies, there's no reason to put up with the drag that a dynamo puts on the tire.

Well, a dynamo is just a generator. A light is a light.

So, if you would like to be able to see well ahead of you at night while riding your bike you could use one of these.

You might also use a battery operated light.

The dynamo is " ALWAYS " there, while any battery will deteriorate- best combination is a rechargeable battery or a CAPACITOR, so that you charge it up with pedalling, and then it stays bright for a long time, including comming to a stop.

the only benefit of using a dynamo is the fact that you know you are helping to save the environment by not using (toxic time bombs, full of chemicals and heavy metals)... batteries, pedal power, :D

Not a good idea, get a rechargable light as I do, they're much better, dynamo lights suck too much drag, slows you down.
