Yeah, Wynton is well respected. I saw him once in the Village Vanguard. He deserves every little bit of the respect he gets. He is amazing.

Nicholas Payton, out of New Orleans is another great.

Chris Botti is popular, but not very adventurous. He sounds a lot like Chet Baker.

PS-These are jazz musicians. I don't know any classical.

For classical, Hakan Hardenberger from Sweden is very, very good and for jazz, I would have to say Wynton Marsalis.

well, maynard ferguson WAS... then there's chris botti, rick braun, guido basso, jens lindemann...there are plenty more, but those are the some of the ones i'm more familiar with. Jens Lindemann is said to be THE best...and after attending one of his concerts, I have little doubt. He can do classical/jazz/anything else that exists.

idk about specific people but players in drum corps like phantom regiment and the cadets are pretty amazing to me.
