My uncle was in Vietnam, and after he came back he suffered from post traumatic stress syndrome. He had gone there and fallen in love with my aunt who worked in a hospital and they came back and got married, a real fairy tale story. Well his mental health slipped and slipped and he pretty much lost his mind and one day he started having flashbacks and freaking out and shot my aunt and killed her. He recieved life without parole and suffered a massive heart attack after being in for about a month and became a vegetable. He spent 16 years in this condition being cared for and kept alive in a hospital and just died about a month ago. I know thats a long story, but my simple question is this. Where was god then? Why would he allow that to happen?

Yeah, that God has a weird sense of humor. One that isn't worthy of respect much less worship.

The human condition is one of suffering. There is evil in our world because the universe (before and after the conception of earth) has always contained the potential for negativity. There has to be a balance, or else things would make no sense. No matter how effed up things may seem to us, there is always a benefit, seen or unseen. God's goal is to get as many people to heaven as possible- and to get to heaven, your soul has to be developed correctly, and it must be ready for heaven. If the only things you ever experienced were good, you would have no appreciation for them, and you would not have the understanding necissary. However tough it is, there are lessons we must learn in order to become who we are meant to be. The lessons are not always directed at the people we'd think- what happened with your aunt and uncle might have somehow affected someone half way across the globe who might never elsewise have aquired what they needed to, had this not happened. We cannot possibly know, but it is up to us to decide how we feel about it. Bad things will happen, there is no way to stop that. I believe that God would not let something happen if He did not have a purpose for it. Sometimes I feel really frustrated because I don't know why He does certain things, but I can accept that He is much bigger than me, and He is the one with the panoramic view. I cannot see the whoel spectrum. This might be a very hackneyed thing to say, and I'm sure you've heard it before and will hear it again, but for me that's just the way it is. It's just my opinion.

I am sorry to hear about your aunt and uncle. Its understandable that you may be mad with God, or just mad, and wonder how things like could happen after loosing your uncle after so many years of suffering. Thats a pretty normal reaction. There is no way to tell what God's plan was, or is, alot of the time. We could try to guess, but really, only God truely knows. Unfortunately, many bad things happen to good people, nad it can be hard to understand and accept. But clearly, a God that loves his creations doesnt want them to suffer, and doesnt leave them to suffer alone. I wish I had better answers. I would suggest if you are religious to spend some time in prayer, and maybe talk to someone in your faith in depth about how your feeling right now. Yours are a normal response to this type of traumatic loss, and you will not surprise/shock/offend anyone with how your feeling. A religious person in your particuliar faith may be better able to help you sort through your feeling as they relate to your situation and your religion, and how God helps people through grief.
Best wishes. Again, sorry about your loss.

One explanation would be that all that you mention happened as a result of the War in Viet Nam. Bad or not, this war was started by people, not by God. One thing that we all have is free will, and it was some peoples' free will that got us into that mess over there. Why your uncle and then your aunt suffered is apparently a direct result of this. Humans obviously make mistakes-! Students make mistakes on tests and on exams. This does not mean that there is no teacher nor does this mean that the school has no principal.

I am so sorry to hear that story. Losing a loved one is hard, but watching it happen is even worse, I would imagine. To answer your question about god. I also asked myself that many years ago when I lost my father. All I can say is that there is no god. I found this out for myself because I too asked "how could he let this happen". I found out that "he" lets it happen because god doesn't exist. We all live and die and go through crap and great times, not necessarily in that order. I don't think that one thing controls us or has a plan for us all. If that were true, then why would he plan such a focked up fate for your uncle and for my father and for many other poor people out there? I can't tell you what to think, believe, hate, love or whatever. But I will tell you that a situation like yours opened my eyes about religion and all the bs that is contains. I'm sorry for your loss and I wish you the best.

He was there all along, just like He was with Job, just like he was by my side when I experienced traumatic events in my life. He said He would never leave or forsake us, I believe that even if I have to go through the fire. Being a believer does not exempt you from tragedies, but it is absolutely under the control of the Almighty God. Was your uncle a believer?? Did he ever gave his life to Jesus? Sometimes when we are His children tragedies in our lives are used to test our faith, and perseverance. Look what happened to His apostles in the book of Acts. They were incarcerated, murdered, made fun of, God allowed His only begotten son to die on the cross so we could have eternal life. I know my name is written in the Lamb's Book of Life, even if the rug were to be pulled from under me. I have experienced some severe trials in my life that I did not think I would overcome, but I see what God was trying to do in my life now, after the fact.

God works in many different ways and you must look outside and beyond the box. Look at it this way, it is amazing that your uncle was able to survive and come back home from Vietnam. He could of been one of the many that never were able to see they're family again like your uncle was able to see you again. How would you of felt if you never saw him again? See there's your answer. So consider his presence a miricle and not a tragedy. Have faith in God and remember you die for a reason and it was his time so have faith and praise God!

God was with him. God was with your aunt. God is everywhere. Why did he allow it to happen? Everyone has free will. Satan right now is playing with everyone. He is happy right now because he had two people do his dirty work. Your uncle, who went to war. And you, who is questioning God. That's what he wants. Question God and not believe. To go back to your uncle, please don't think that I am saying that he was wrong. He had a job to do. I think that our veterans don't get enough credit. I have family who have served in the armed forces. I just think that war is wrong. I don't believe that it is ok to kill another human being. But that 's me. I wouldn't push that on anyone else or look down on anyone that has had to. God is with you now. Pray that he can give you the answers you seek.

God allows people to have free will. Your uncle SHOULD have goneto get medical help, instead, he wound up killing the one thing he loved. So, God ws watching, and your uncle was reunited with his wife after the heart attack
