A cheap car pre 1990, with manual transmission, no power steering without stability control and ABS. I learnt and drove for 2 years with a Mini... I tell you, I learnt a lot through driving mistakes and it has made me a better driver in the sense of defensive driving. It has also made me able to drive ANY car, having driven a car without power assisted options and manual trans.

However, I have a racing heritage owing a thanks to my dad. I had my dad coaching me on driving even while on my P plates to drive defensively. So, if you do not trust the skills of the new driver, either enrol that person in a defensive driving course or get a car with ABS and traction control.

I heard that the Ford Taurus was the most popular first car for teen drivers a couple of years ago. Of course times change. It's probably a Toyota or something.

Corolla, Civic, Protege are most reliable

if you can give up a bit of reliability to save money, Cobalt/Cavalier is a good bet

pontiac grand am, easy to drive and sporty looking.. of course they don't make them anymore (they replaced it with the G6 and G5) but a used car is a good first car anyway.
