People from the United Kingdom write it colour. Americans write color. Just like flavour and flavor and other words. Why? I have no idea, but that is how they teach it at school over there.

Uhm, the spelling is different in different parts of the world. The British way of spelling color is Colour, the ennunciation is a bit different in the UK as well. While in the states we slur our words together so the faster way of saying color is tid bit different the the way the Brits say it.

The English got the word from the French (remember William the Conqueror came over and took over the country in 1062, bringing the language with him). Spelling rules weren't very strong, up till the time of the American Revolution people kind of spelled as they wanted to.

But in the American colonies they wanted to simplify spelling, so they dropped out the "U"

Colour is the older English spelling, replaced by the shorter color. In American English color is the accepted spelling while other English speaking coutries tend to favor the older spelling.

Hello Shelbycake !

When people write colour, that usually indicates an European education; or just being prissy, like me, when I choose to write the word colour...

I just like the difference..

I'm not really sure why, I just know that here in the U.S. it's spelled 'color', but I have a friend in Canada and (at least where he lives) they spell it 'colour'. Same thing with 'favorite' and 'favourite' ... there's lots of words. They mean the same thing though.
