My sister holds her fork in an interesting way. She holds it so that her index (pointer) finger is almost touching the back of the prongs. Is this wrong? What is the right way to hold a fork if you're right handed people in North America?

To whoever asked, my sister isn't trying to be European, she is European, a least partly. We're both half-Canadian, half-British.

That's correct as long as it's in her left hand and she's cutting something.

Damned right it is wrong. Smack her up side the back of the head and tell her to eat the beans and rice with her fingers like most of the people in the world. How sick, fingers near the prongs.

When you cut meat and you're right handed you need to hold your fork in your left hand like you mention (backwards), and you then cut with your right hand.

Now, some people trade hands to eat, but it's just fine to go ahead and eat it in that position from your left hand.

Funny... I never really pay attention to how folks hold their forks, or spoons either.
