It is unlikely that you can lose that much that fast in a healthy way. By eating reasonable portions (hint: get smaller plates) high in fruits and vegetables and low in fat, and getting a moderate amount of cardio (at least 90 minutes a week), you may be able to lose around half a pound to a pound a week, perhaps (these are guesses and will vary depending on your particulars). Diet has a greater effect than exercise.
The other thing good about losing weight without crash dieting is that you will learn new habits that will stick with you through thick, then, temptations, etc.
Just keep in mind that a pound of fat is about 3000 calories -- so if you're taking in 3000 calories somewhere and not getting rid of it, look for the pound of fat.
Good luck!

OK, if you want to lose weight that fast you could use almost any of those diet pills that are out now, but those are for 'crash diets' The weight does come off quickly, but it comes right back once you start to become immune to the pills or you stop taking them. You best bet I believe is to get a gym membership, then you can get help from people that know what they are doing and give you a time frame that will work well for the goal you want. Depending on your body metabolism, you could lose the weight at a slow, normal or fast rate.

A nutritionist once said I should eat more protein & vegetables-- and reduce my consumption of carbohydrates. They should be avoided all together after 6 p.m.. Exercise helps a lot. Even small efforts like parking your car father away... or taking the stairs rather than the elevator.
But lastly, I lost 10 pounds in recent months with the above advice... and a Chinese herbal tea I drank at bedtime. Even consulted a gastroenterologist to make sure it wouldn't cause harm-- and he authorized it's use every other day, when necessary.
It's called THREE BALLERINA TEA. It's listed on Ebay. The box states the following:
3 Ballerina Tea Dieter's Drink
Natural Green Leaf Brand
Information:
This special formula, Dieter's Drink, is an all natural tea that is soothing and relaxing and especially delightful for those desiring to adjust weight.*
Ingredients:
Malva Verticellata (Chinese Mallow)
Cassia Angustifolia (Senna)
Actions:
Promote bowel movements, flush waste

37 is far from middle age. Anyways you should do some form of cardio exercise for about half hour a day. If you can run for half an hour that would be great. Counting your calory intake is a must. There is no diet pill that will work. If there was such a magic pill available then there wouldn't be so many overweight or obese people in the world.

Supervised weight training and dieting with a nutritionist are the fastest and safest ways to "burn" fat in order to "lose" weight. But do not rely on the scale alone... you may lose weight through exercise yet gain weight in muscle tone (muscle is denser and weighs more than flab/fat).
HOWEVER, do it right. Go see a doctor and get a full medical exam to determine that you are physically fit (you don't want to suffer a heart attack, do you?).
Then, join a gym with a State licenses/certified trainer who will show you the proper ways to stretch and warm up and perform the necessary exercises and prevent unnecessary injuries.
Also, see a dietitian so that you can eat proper, nutritional food to help you increase your energy levels and not take in "bad" calories.
That is the best way to do it but you must also remember that staying fit and trim is really a matter of balancing the calories you take in and those you burn during the normal course of the day. Normally, as we age, we tend to slow down in our activities (due to work commitment, family obligations, etc) and our metabolism also slows down... so our bodies normally tend to store more "energy" in the form of body fat around the hips, the tummy and our legs and the back of arms.
Don't be in too much of a rush; the weight that goes off quickly tends to come back just as quickly but with a few extra "friends" (pounds) accompanying them... so, do it right. Being "in shape" is a lifelong commitment! Start going to dances, bowling, etc. Go out and have fun, stop sitting in front of the computer as you're doing now! Good luck and please be well.

Don't drink soft drinks, instead drink water. If you can't afford bottled water get a filter for your tap. Exercise at least 6 days a week. Don't just do aerobic exercise. Do a combination of aerobic and anarobic exercise. Muscle burns caloried. Also don't over do it. If you try to do too much at once you'll burnout and give up. Gradually work things into your daily routine. A good routine is to walk 5 miles a day. If you can't do it all at once try to break it up. Maybe walk 3 miles in the morning and 2 at night. But if you're not used to walking so much it will be hard at first. Your body should get used to walking so much within 3 days or so. So don't get discouraged. Weight lifting isn't hard and it doesn't take much time to do a few repititions. The key to weight lifting is not to work the same muscles everyday. Muscles need rest in order to grow. Also gradually increase the amount of weight as you get stronger. If you don't like to walk, try swimming or any kind of exercise that gets your heart pumping.
As far as diet goes, I recommend preparing all your own food. You burn calories by making food yourself. Stay away from fried foods and deserts and candies. If you want something sweet eat honey or some fruit with light cream.
Try adding these to your daily diet: 3 cups of unsweeted green tea a day (it thins the blood and has good antioxidants), 2 cups of yogurt with fruit in it (don't get lowfat because it has added sugars). The bacteria in yogurt will help strengthen your immune system, 1 cup of oatmeal (it helps lower cholestorol), 1 fruit with every meal, at least 2 vegetables with every meal, 1 small bowl of beans with dinner will help to keep you full so you don't have midnight cravings, trying eating rice white/brown instead of bread (it will satisfy your craving for carbs), also lay off the potatoes because they are full of sugar, if you must have a starchy food, eat yams because they are full vitamins. Potatoes have vitamins, but the sugar in them gets into the bloodstream too quickly like candy or soda.
I hope this helps. You'll find that you feel better and have more energy if you follow my advice. It takes a little bit before you see results, but within a week you will probably lose 5 pounds. Especially if you are man because men lose weight more quickly than women on average. Keep it up and the pounds will melt away.

At this age - you have to exercise more and eat less than you used to just to stay the same size you used to be - so check out weight watchers, or count calories, etc... and definately start exercising - start with walking and work up to other things.
The best advice I can give you is to make sure you eat at least 4 meals (smaller ones) a day. If you leave less time between meals you will not get as hungry. Cut out most fats - about 90% of them. Definately eat protein (helps with concentration and staying awake) Cut out bread/pot's after 6 pm at night but you can have extra protein and as many veggies as you want (salad too) and some fruits.
Egg whites are a great source of protein (No cholesterol - and very few calories - about 18 calories per egg white) Eat a few of these and some cream of wheat or Oatmeal for breakfast. For Lunch have chicken or fish 4 oz, 1 cup rice or 1 small baked pot. and as many veg's as you want as long as there is very very little fat on them. Have another meal like this in later afternoon and another no later than 7 pm. You will lose almost 8 - 10 lbs the first week eating healthy (but you have to exercise at least 15 min's ea day even if it's just walking). The next few weeks you will lose less but still at least 3-5 lbs a week. And this way is healthy for you and you will not be starving.
PS - if you are a junk food eater - try to cut down alot but the occasional pc of chocolate or something is OK if you exercise a little more that day to burn off the extra calories. If you love junk food and totally cut it out - this could lead to binge eating and diet failure. Try to substitute a junk snack for one that is less calories than you usually have. (I am addicted to chocolate and ate a small candybar and still lost weight - and inches - I would buy a single candybar ( to avoid eating a whole bag) and read the calories on the back - let's say the chocolate was 190 calories - I would go on my treadmill til I walked off over the 190 calories - so I felt Ok about this little cheat and I still lost weight and inches every week)

That's a lot of weight to try to take off in that short period of time. Forget the diet pills. Cut down on quantity of food and snacks. Cut out cookies, candy, ice cream, chips and don't go to fast food places. Reduce or eliminate fried foods, rice, potatoes,
pasta bread. and all high fat, high carb foods.
Keep a note pad around and write down EVERYTHING you eat and the quantity.
No junk food snacks at night watching tv! Celery sticks with some low fat cream cheese or peanut butter would be good as a snack if you're really hungry. Pretzels are ok too, if you don't eat the whole bag, as I might do. Good luck and let us know how you do. Go for a walk when you get a craving for junk food. EXERCISE DAILY
