It would be nice if Iraq wanted democracy, but I fear that it doesn't, and that they'll keep killing our troops until we leave. When we do leave, they'll probably have a civil war and end up with the same kind of government that they had before. A Saddam type of government. Is there any real hope for democracy in Iraq?

PS - I pray for world peace, but I'm not sure that what we're doing over there is helping.

Occupations always fail. Bush is too stupid to realize this. Israel has occupied gaza and the west bank for 39 years, and it hasn't gotten any better.

China occupies tibet, it is still a disaster for both sides.

iraq's civilization has been around long before the USA even existed. Iraq wants to be free of occupation and to have self-determination. It has no interest in the USA forcing an unwanted government on them.

Look at it this way, if iraq invaded and occupied the USA and installed a pro-iraqi government, would you accept it?

The United States is not a Democracy. It is a Democratic Republic where the many vote for the few who represent them. In a true Democracy everyone is represented which might be a bit difficult to do considering the population here. As I see it we do not actually have people representing us in the government but a group of people who represent the rich, the empowered and business. I see the US as more of a capitalistic society. So is the question will Iraq achieve what we do not have here now or in the future or will it become Capitalistic like we have become? Iraq is a nation carved out of many nations and forced to become one. It has had a history of uprisings and overthrows of power. One can only hope for peace and stability for the sake of that region and those people but as long as people push hatred of differences in others and try to control freedoms then I suppose it will be none the less. No Iraq is not and will not be a Democracy ever I believe the US is trying to make it a Democratic Republic because the other systems did not work hoping it will help them become more stable like we are for the sake of the world and the middle east. I just hope our country can remember that and keep it instituted here also.

(1) For your information, civil war is already a reality. There is a de facto Kurdish state in the north. The southeast is controlled by Shia paramilitaries. The west is controlled by Sunni tribes. The center is contested.

(2) There is no more Baath Party or Republican Guard, thus no force strong enough to tip the balance enough to take over the whole country. Nor, to be blunt, do any of the major players realistically want the entire country.

(3) More Iraqis die than Americans, day to day, hands down. July alone saw 3500 of them killed - most of the civilians. Most of the deaths, sadly, are Iraqi on Iraqi. Murder is at a pitch; the going rate is about 100 Iraqis killed per day.

(4) Who said we were leaving? Germany and Japan are still occupied by American troops after 60 years since the end of the Second World War. What makes anyone think we'll leave voluntarily?

(5) Democracy and self-rule for each of the ethnic and religious groups do not complement each other. Pointing to the elections of last year as proof that Iraq can be democratic is like saying because prison inmates line up for chow, they must like being incarcerated. Think on the following:

- If American troops were not present to ensure security, would elections have been possible?

- Is any democracy viable when each and every party involved has a military wing or ties to some armed faction?

- Is any democracy possible when rule of law is not established and there are no institutions to sustain a democracy (education, judiciary, trade unions, ombudsman groups etc) that can exist without fear of being hunted down by armed thugs?

- When loyalty to ethnic group, religious affiliation, tribe or region is stronger than any idea of nationhood, how can you have people sacrifice their interests and their guns to coexist?

American troops will likely be in Iraq for years more, in one form or another. Compared to having create functional nation-states out of Afghanistan and Iraq, it would have been easier to fix Lebanon back in 1985.

First off, let me educate you a little bit, okay? If the Iraqis didn't want freedom, and democracy, they wouldn't of came out in droves to vote, in the face of terrorists threatening them, and their families. Some walked as far as 13 miles to vote! Second, we're not at war with the Iraqis, it's terrorists that wish to oppress the Iraqis the way Saddam did. Lastly, if we leave before we complete the mission in Iraq, there WILL be another government like Saddams, because the terrorists would make sure of it.

No, they'll end up with a much worse government than they had before, because it will be controlled by religious extremists. Brutal as Saddam was, at least he was secular and wasn't in any hurry to help out the other despots in the region. Now, all the brutal dictators will be working together, in the name of Allah. While Iran gets the bomb, and cozies right up to all that chaos in their neighbor and former enemy, Iraq. Great.

Dear Avanti...I have a problem with your use of the word CONTINUE as if they're a democracy now...Also America going there wasn't part of the solution but part of the problem, in fact a large part of it. Having said this, I also pray for world peace, but I doubt if it will come when people are sooooooo ignorant of what's happening and war mongers keep getting elected.

NO they will not! Don't even expect it! Bush has now changed his reason for going into Iraq! It is now "to give them a chance" to develop a democracy!! What does that tell you?

Did Kuwait ever change to a Democracy??? I don't think so!

And who wants a Democracy anyway, it is a terrible form of government! We aren't even a democracy!
