I would not want to go pick tomatoes in the hot sun for hours, being an American....Even for decent wage! I think I am spoiled though!
I feel bad for those people and it would be a good experience to do it for a week, just to get perspective as to what these people have to endure....Day in and day out....
Keep in mind, they come from this type of life and even though it seems hard to imagine living like this, they are used to this lifestyle and perhaps don't see it as being so bad....
I say we stop the slave labor and get these valuable workers registered with our govt. and stop criminalizing them for working...Get them to pay taxes and legalize them...

Give it a break--the facts below
I will speak for many farmers-the 80% who don't want illegals here. Your food is covered-most farmers do not support the big corp farms who use migrant workers.
less than 10 percent by Mexico (10%pickers-less10% other farm related)--the other 90% of the farms say your welcome. We don't need you -you need us. Be nice
"Phillip Martin, an economist at the University of California, Davis, has demolished the argument that a crackdown on illegals would ruin it, or be a hardship to consumers. Most farming — livestock, grains, etc. — doesn't heavily rely on hired workers. Only about 20 percent of the farm sector does, chiefly those areas involving fresh fruit and vegetables.
The average "consumer unit" in the U.S. spends $7 a week on fresh fruit and vegetables, less than is spent on alcohol, according to Martin. On a $1 head of lettuce, the farm worker gets about 6 or 7 cents, roughly 1/15th of the retail price. Even a big run-up in the cost of labor can't hit the consumer very hard.
Martin recalls that the end of the bracero guest-worker program in the mid-1960s caused a one-year 40 percent wage increase for the United Farm Workers Union. A similar wage increase for legal farm workers today would work out to about a 10-dollar-a-year increase in the average family's bill for fruit and vegetables. Another thing happened with the end of the bracero program: The processed-tomato industry, which was heavily dependent on guest workers and was supposed to be devastated by their absence, learned how to mechanize and became more productive."
If every illegal alien here today currently left America, the immediate economic impact would be insignificant and over the long haul, the impact would likely be negligible.
Now--I think the government is for big business-all of them-that is who helps them win elections. But the tides are turning-the people are speaking out and taking action. This will create change.

I am a mexican. Not from mexico.4th generation here. I have uncles who served in ww1,ww2, the Korean, V.N. and now cousins in Iraq.I am a Navy vet.
What I say to your question is I picked ,jalepenos, cotton, watermelons, bell peppers, and cherries.I did it for summer spending money.I am an American and no ever told me thank you. I was a teen doing this work.So do you think i give a dam about the illegals doing this work? I do not. They want to be here stop complaining and do the work. Pay taxes get screwed by the Gov. They are not supposed to be here anyways. How would Mexico or any other country felt if we went and started to take over thier country by way of massive intrusion.
all you who are out thier and for the illegals just wait untill your grand chidren are working for illegals for even cheaper wages .like reverse in your own country. Good ole U. S. A

I agree that there is a certain number of immigrant workers needed in this country. I also believe that there needs to be some control on immigration. The illegal immigrants are not taking my job. They are taking the jobs of legal immigrants. It is these people that are being hurt. It is also the lower income people that are being hurt. Rich people like you and me can benefit from the illegal immigrants.
We have to stop thinking only of ourselves, and help people that are in need. This includes the Mexican people. The problem is not the good hardworking people of Mexico. The problem is not the Americans. The reason illegal immigration has escalated to a problem is that the Americans want to help the Mexicans. It is hard to say no. It is hard to treat them as a criminal. They only what to provide for their families.
The problem lies with Mexico. Letting more and more illegal immigrants into this country does not help the problem with Mexico. Instead it hurts the U.S. Lets have an immigrant worker program in the U.S. and at the same time help create more jobs in Mexico.
The president of Mexico needs to fix Mexico, not worry about our government. He is failing to help the Mexican people and diverting the attention to the U.S.

If every illegal left today, I would gladly pay more for any product as long as Americans are doing those jobs.
If illegals didn't sneak across our borders, then I would know that our government is doing its job which is protecting the American people.
I think politicians and federal employees should be out picking those crops since they do such a deplorable job defending our borders.

Um, my Grandpa says it every day........ he has a farm. I used to work on it when I was a teen. It wasn't always fun, but I liked the feeling of putting in a hard days work. It made me feel important in a way I can't describe. My work now is good, but the accomplishments are so much less tangible......... alright, you've done it! I'm gonna have to start a garden...... hope you're happy.
Just because you won't do the work, doesn't mean other Americans won't, don't or can't.

I agree with 51 aint bad. Who did it before we had so many illegals here? So the wages will have to go up. Good it is long over due. But that is a ****** up job huh? Legals or illegals, I think that it should be illegal to pay such low wages for such hard work.

I picked tomatoes and so did my parents and I am still alive to tell you about it. We have picked strawberries and chopped cotton and I also know how to mow my yard. I can tell you that nobody wants to, even you but we all do what we have to do to live. There are persons who would do it again if they could get the work but all those jobs are filled with illegals.

and have you ever wondered why (since their such "hard workers") they have free health care? they don't pay taxes? they can't get off their fat @sses to get some birth control? they cant even take the time to alter their own country so that its livable. that's anything but hard working! i don't see you saying you want to "go and work from 4 in the morning till really late in a very uncomfortable position." either. so don't talk sh!t unless you can back it up. go to bed, its past your bed-time

I am an American, and I would like to know if illegals can do any other jobs beside picking tomatoes? Because if this is your argument, I had know Idea we had 12 million tomato pickers. I shall plant my garden in October to help alleviate the tomato farmers in America.. Thanks.
