You should use the middle rack unless instructed to do differently in your recipe instructions or if baking multiple pans at a time. Ovens usually have "hot spots" meaning they don’t bake at an even temperature throughout the oven. For example, the front or back may be hotter than the middle.
Once you pre-heat the oven, check the thermometer inside to see if the temperature is correct for your baking project. Pre-heating can take as long as 20 minutes. Adjust the temperature until the correct oven temperature is attained.

Middle is the best because that's where the baking will even out. A tip, never bake more than one thing in the same section at once. For example, never have something on the top and middle rack at the same time.

Use the middle rack, the reason being as follows

Lower rack the bottom of the pan will heat up higher and your cake will burn on the bottom before the center and top has a chance to bake.

Upper rack the heat will rise to the top and collect burning the top of your cake before the bottom and center have a chance to bake.

Center rack the heat will hit the bottom as it raises and flows up the sides heating the pan evenly. As the heat goes over the top edge of the pan it will follow the cake top heating and baking it evenly.

I do like using the top rack. I have used it for almost all of my baking. And all depends on how much the food rises. If you reedy know how much it rices ahead of time that would be good to know, that way you can judge it to be on the top or the middle. I like to back my small items on top and my big items in the middle.

For baking the middle one. Still you should watch how your oven behaves. That means if the top (or bottom)of your cake is not burned more than the other one and also how fast (good) your oven is. Sometimes the time given is different.

If you cook on convection it doesn't matter you can use all levels and cook several at a time, because it is air flow and they will come out a lot better then the regular oven. Also it takes less time to cook. But if you don't have convection then middle rack.

Whichever rack puts your batter in the very middle of the oven. So if you have 4 choices, put your rack on the 3rd one down and that will usually put your food in the center of hte oven.
