You can get magnetic games such as checkers and chess, that way they won't slide around in the car. Crayola makes markers to draw on the windows with. Books are always good. You could find a craft at Michaels that may be suitable in the car, maybe making bead necklaces or bracelets. Of course there's always singing, and playing eye spy too. There's this game that's fun also. Whoever is it thinks of an object and the rest of the people have to guess what the object is. They can only ask yes or no questions, for instance is it brown? Is it alive etc. It's actually pretty fun.

License plate bingo. You might be able to find this at Cracker Barrel. Otherwise, you can make up your own cards. Do it with states. This has the advantage of being somewhat educational.

20 questions.

Read the map. Get them to figure out what the next town is and how long it will take to get there. Or have them find what town each cross highway leads to.

Radio dial. Tune to a radio station to find out where they are broadcasting from. Then have them find the place on the map.

Coloring books and reading, if they don't get carsick.

We just saw this on tv yesterday - each kid picks a color and then they count each car they see that is their color. The first one to (you set the number) wins!
For older kids, we made up bingo boards with squares that had things you see on the road -
Flag
Cows
Cemetary
Truck
Donuts store
and make sure all the boards a different, then they cross off the things as they see them, and the first one to get bingo wins!

Memory games are fun - remember "I packed my suitcase and in it I put"?

Have a safe and fun road trip!

Twenty questions
Get books on tape from the library and have kids listen to great stories and then ask them questions. Or go to Wal-Mart and buy cheap walkmans for five dollars. Then buy the books on tape. The best way to create good strong readers is to have them read to. Let them follow along with the stories and ask questions afterwards. Ask math facts, spell words and ask what they are, etc.

Here are some of my kids' favorite car-ride games:

1. "STOP TOUCHING ME!!!" (This has been a favorite in my family for generations.)

2. "HE'S ON MY SIDE OF THE BACK SEAT" helps kids understand fractions of centimeters. Can also easily be played with a kid in the front, too.

3. STOP SAYING WHAT I SAY. Stop saying what I say. KNOCK IT OFF!! Knock it off!! DAD!!! Dad!!!

4. And my personal favorite, Barf on Your Sister Because She Said You Were Faking Being Car Sick. Everybody gets involved in this one!

Mad Libs are great! They're not only funny, but a great way to teach your child: nouns, verbs, adjectives, etc.

The other thing I'm suggesting isn't a game, but it sure makes the trip a lot more pleasant when the natives get restless. A portable DVD player - they're worth every penny :)

Happy trails!

The story game. Each person takes turn saying a sentence, leading the story on to sillier and sillier heights. The man walked down the street with a suitcase. (next person) in it he found a hat (next person) the had contained ice cream. (next person) etc. etc.

sorry, that's not the best story but you get the idea.

-I Spy
-Car Bingo (can make yourself)
-Count the 18-wheelers stuck in traffic (fun when your not in it)
-Count how many McDonalds you can drive past before dad actually stops at one. (since there's like 20 every two steps)
-Name that tune
-The Quiet Game (My parents' favorite)

There are more and I was serious about these games, too!

Hope I could make your road trip better!
