I could blame human nature, but that seems unoriginal and being someone who often says dumb things, i'll try to make up for it by coming up with a bs/inteligent answer. Mabey teh political theory of pluralism could explain it, that there are so many intrests that not everyone can possibly be satisfied completly: there are so many different things that people might find offensive, hurtful, or just plain dumb that it may be more shocking when something that someone says doesn't fall into one of the above categories to someone listening. Chances are, this answer falls into one of those categories to you.

most people in general do not think before they speak. i was always told this was a good tact to learn to get ahead further in life with the right sort of people by my side.
think before you act and think before you speak. its easier said than done. but people would be the better for it if they could manage this.
also people love to criticise and ridicule for the enjoyment of it. people are harsh and its just better to learn how to ignore thier ignorance, because otherwise you are letting their ignorant foolishness get the best of you.
the best way to handle imaturity coming from any age that just cant keep thier "word vomit" to themselves is to look at them very seriously with a straight face and just say in a serious tone "well that was just an impressive example of your tact" and stare them down until they feel ridiculous. they can only make a bigger fool of themselves after that by anything that they chose to say. and perhaps MAYBE they will learn it isnt OKAY to act stupid or say stupid things anymore just to get attention or to make themselves feel more of an importance in life.
