Christians are here simpy to preach the Gospel (good news of Jesus salvation) until Jesus comes back and puts an end to life as we know it everywhere. Whoever wants to be saved can by acknowledging Jesus is the Son of God and following his teachings. Whoever doesnt want it, wont be forced.

Whoever acknowledges me before men, I will also acknowledge him before my Father in heaven. But whoever disowns me before men, I will disown him before my Father in heaven. -Matthew 10:32

I'm Atheist. I really don't want to sound like a downer, this is just what my belief is, sorry if it offends anyone.

I think we have no purpose here, we are just animals with intelligence as our special "trait". Cheetahs are fast, Giraffes are tall, we are intelligent. We are just an animal that has gotten too arrogant in it's intelligence so we cannot accept the fact that we just die. I guess it is that we cannot cope without some comfort that our lives are for nothing, which is a sad way to look at it. I actually don't think our lives are wasted, I think that our lives, if we work at it, will help all humans, and life itself, live happily without care. That is what true peace will be, not a place you get it for free after 90 or 100 years, but a place that the entire species must work to achieve.

Wow, I think my response touched my own heart.

Also, you can't ask an Atheist what the definition of God is, you can ask "What is the definition of a god," but not "God." If I had to answer that question, I would say a fictitious character created to comfort the unsatisfied. That is my opinion, I don't mean to offend.

I will be corteous even tough I believe that you're question was less than courteous to non-believers. Well if you believe that it is all right to walk all over everyone just because there is no God, you are a bad person. I want to help because I have respect for my fellow man, I am a Humanist. I believe that if we want to be in a nice society we've got to build a nice society and the belief in gods it's not helping, in fact, it's kind of destroying the world and creating wars amongst the people. Just my opinion. And, as I'm sure you figured out, I am an atheist.
Amongst the people that answered seriously I see that some christians say that their purpose in life is to serve God. That's fine with me. But to me that would be a very shallow existence, I am not a slave. I don't live to serve or to worship.

I'm not polite and respectful to others because I'm scared of some God.
More like it's because my parents raised me right and I have morals and ethics. I'm sad for people who are only nice because they're threatened with some supernatural being.

I have no idea what purpose anyone has here. I should hope that while we are here, we can all be nice and helpful to each other because thats the way we should be.

There is no benefit in life to walk over people. We do party and do things with far less guilt. The purpose is the same as everyones else, consume, reproduce, care for offspring, make fertilizer for trees. In between that biological drive we have a hell of a time and work to advance the species and make a better life on earth.

Are you honestly telling me that if you were convinced there was no Higher Being, you would start taking advantage of everyone and would have no motivation to do good for others? That your ONLY reason for refraining from bad things and for doing good things is because of your belief in God?

I think better of you. I sincerely doubt you are as morally weak as that.

Considering that non-believers are less common in prison than in the general population, it's clear that lack of religious belief does not lead to poor behavior.

It is both inherently rewarding to do good, and socially rewarding. Whether you approach from a moral standpoint or a self-interested standpoint, doing good deeds is the way to go.

You can do lots of reading in philosophy on morality and ethics, in which many people have laid out moral systems that are not contingent upon a deity.

And while most people have not approached ethics in such formal terms - including believers - it's clear that people can and do find reasons to do good in the world without fear of eternal punishment.

In simplest terms I think we're supposed to love and respect one another and we're supposed to work together to make this life experience better. I'm not a religious person but I think what I've said is consistent with most religious teachings. Maybe we need to spend more time exploring and understanding and focusing on the similarities between different faiths rather than the differences.

Muslims are taught that the only purpose for a human is to worship God. But we were given free will, unlike God's other creations.
