Three reasons.
First, some of them like to show off their stunning intellectualism by trying to make us Christians feel foolish by twisting the Word of God to ask questions which make no sense. They also make analogies like "Would you send your son own son to die for someone who hates, murders, steals, etc", which they think mirrors God's sending Jesus to die for our sins. It is just idiotic.
Second, since Atheists do not believe in God, many of them are miserable, simply because they have nothing to believe in, so in turn, they feel the need to drag others down with them.
Third, some of these Atheists are kids, who don't know what they are talking about, or even what they want. Some are rebelling, some are idealistic, but whatever the reason, they are lost.

Well, I think some people of the world actually have never seen a computer, muuch less used the internet.
But, probably most people on this site are Americans, and while atheists are a minority, I think people are more apt to denounce and rebel against the fundamentalists and extremists that seem to permeate America's society. I know most aren't fundamentalist and/or extremists, but the it seems the most outspoken are.
Anyway, I got on this site because I accidently found my sister's answers and discovered the site. I asked her about it, and thought it was cool, so I signed up. I enjoy the site very much, though many of the questions can be stupid.

Most people of the world lack access to the Internet and probably don't understand English.
Those who do have access to the Internet are disproportionately wealthier and better educated than those who do not. In addition, the kind of person who posts on Yahoo Answers is probably going to be more inquisitive and intellectual than the average person.
All of these qualities of the typical Yahoo Answers participant- the higher income, the better education, the more inquisitive and intellectual nature- are all positively associated with atheists. That's not to say that atheists are atheists because they are smarter or better than believers. It's just that it takes a fair degree of skepticism, education, and security to publicly admit to being an atheist. It makes sense that the people with these qualities would cluster somewhere like Yahoo Answers.

Maybe because we have one extra day of the week to go online. :) Just kidding.
You also have to think about those statistics. Yahoo Answers is a Western website. Most of the world's population live across the Atlantic and many live in poorer conditions than we do, so they need, or want, a higher power to bring them comfort.
Whatever, that's just my opinion.

Consider what fraction of the world has access to the Internet, and what tiny sliver of that bothers to answer questions (let alone religion questions) here. It's a highly unrepresentative group (both by circumstances and by self-selection).
Of course, just because a group is a minority doesn't mean they're wrong. "If fifty million people say a foolish thing, it is still a foolish thing." It's just as true if the number is 5.5 billion.

because the fundamentalist Christians and fundamentalist atheists take excitement in the ding-dong battles they have with one yet another. The humanists, Buddhists, mystics, Hindus, Wiccans, agnostics and so on have a tendency to maintain a low profile, perchance because they comprehend that neither area can "win."

Your statistics may be accurate for the world population, but I believe most of the people here are americans so you might want to take a look at american statistics. Also, the population that uses Answers has to have a decent education (although it frequently seems the opposite). People with more education are less likely to be religious.

I never realized this, but now that you mention it there are a lot of atheists on this site. Maybe because a lot of people use yahoo answers, so it just seems like there are a lot.

I think because this site does not require true debate. Everyone post a response but there is very little follow-up. In my opinion this is the perfect environment for all types of people who want to spout off, with very little chance that someone will call them one it. Now, not all of them are atheist, of course. But, this format does lend itself to people who don't want to think things through. Atheist or not.

I'm an atheist myself and I've always wondered why there are so many on here too. I've met only a few atheists in real life.
