Wrap your hands and then put the gloves on. That guy at the store was just trying to sell you the gloves.

RE:
When using a heavy bag, do I need to wrap my hands, or are gloves sufficient?
I just bought a 70 pound heavy bag (I'm 6'1" 300 lbs). I've had some martial arts training, but have never boxed. I've always gone bare hand on the various hand held pads (up to a full body pad) but I think a heavy bag is a totally different animal. I also bought a pair of...

Always wrap your hands and use bag gloves or any glove your comfortable with. The constant pounding with your fist will indeed cause damage to one of the most important things to a boxer, his/her fist. Get your basic herringbone cotton wraps nothing fancy or too expensive. Stay away from "Sports" stores those guys six months ago were selling pet supplies at Pet Smart, now all of a sudden they know about Boxing? Go to Ringside.com or Grant.com or Title.com and get genuine Boxing Equipment. These guys/girls who tell you to hit a bag without wraps or gloves to toughen up your skin really don't care too much about you or what you are trying to do.You're a big guy and when you learn to throw a punch like a Boxer (The correct way) that will be a lot of force driving your fist into the bag, you'll need all the protection you can get. Stay away from Century "Equipment" it's garbage. Get yourself to a Boxing Gym and find a Trainer that will tke care of you and your hands. Good luck JM.

It would come down to your personal preference on this one boss. I've been hitting heavies for a number of years and I alternate between wraps and the gloves. The wraps are def. lighter but when you step into the ring and your used to the weight of the wraps it's going to work against you.
On the flip side, you stick the gloves on and your going to need realize that it's going to take sometime to build your endurance up - but it will materialize in the ring. Even after all these years, I'll still get bloody knuckles after 5 minutes tops. Give them a go and see which one works for your goals.
Take it easy out there!

Always use hand wraps and gloves when working with the heavy bag. Make sure you wrap your hands correctly. Correctly wrapped hands will "fuse" your hands and wrists together as one unit ,it will prevent damage to your knuckles and wrists. Always make sure your thumb is tucked underneath the first two fingers of your hand when throwing your punches. Santana is right, in that when you throw your punches with correct mechanics your hands will be taking on an enormous amount of force. so it's important to protect your hands. One other point, when I wrap my hands I also use athletic/trainers tape along with my hand wraps. It provides extra protection.

I've seen a lot of martial artists practice punching without wraps (or gloves) but I've always been of the opinion that a boxer has to take serious care of his hands. You got to keep those babies wrapped!

You were into martial arts and never hit a heavybag? I used to hit it bare fisted no gloves. If you want to do it the boxing way wrap your hands. If you want to make your hands tougher dont wrap them. If you hit it bare fisted make sure your punches dont slide. Make sure they land solid at first, until your knuckles toughen up. If they slide off the bag your knuckles will bleed.

Best to wrap your hands. We use a heavy bag to train guys in wrestling( to teach them how to punch ) when we have odd number of students.

You're obviously not very smart and have a small penis if you are using fingers from gloves for protection.
