UGH! I mean whats the big secret? Do the manufacturers WANT you to eat expired food? Why can't they just put the date on thier product so we can read the darn thing? NOOOOOOOO instead they put it in a 18 letter/number long code so you don't have a stinkin clue. They could save probably hundreds of dollars a year by not wasting that ink!

I know WHAT it is... it's a expiration date. But why don't they put it in a form so we consumers can read and understand it? It shouldn't be a secret!??

Some of those codes deal with the manufacturing process. The date of production, lot # of the batch made, location, which working shift was present.

If there are any problems with a food product, all of this information greatly helps the manufacturers recall the proper items without throwing away good materials.

I do admit, it is a bit goofy but its all there for a reason.

The date that you can see on the product is the last date that they can legally sell it. It doesn't mean that it's time to throw it away if you have already bought it - especially if it is unopened.

They just label that stuff quickly and it changes often so they can't put it on labels and things.

I agree with you though, they should make it easier to read.
