Depends on how close you want to stay. The cheapest would be to stay in San Luis Obispo, it's about an hour away though. Like others said Morro Bay is also a good place, it's more then SLO though. There's also several places to camp right around there, which is even cheaper then a hotel.

In San Simeon, the closest place to Hearst Castle, there is a Quality Inn. Which is decently priced for the area. Be aware the closer you are to Hearst Castle the less there will be to do/eat.

Anyway here's a good site for you

I stayed in Morro Bay when I visited Hearst Castle.I just stayed at a little motel there..lots of them around, think mine was called the Sundowner. It is a little bit of a drive to the Castle from there. However you should enjoy Morro Bay as well, very cute ocean side town, they have a little wharf area with shops and restaurants. They have a good fish and chip place called Giovannis, just a little walk up window at the end of the pier closest to Morro Rock. Have fun.

The cheapest motels in that area are in Moro Bay, about 30 minutes south of there. Hotels in the immediate area are very expensive.

The T starts off around 5 interior the morning and forestalls working trains after 12 or 1pm. i'm not rather particular which, i've got faith it fairly is 12. i could recommend stay on the Oasis - great deal IN Boston, MA and on the brink of the T.
