I choose contentment. I find that sometimes I am overcome with joy, and at others I am extremely happy. But the balance in between is the contentment I feel every day of my life.

That's a tough one because to me they are almost the same. However, I guess joy is a momentary emotion. You have moments of extreme happiness which I guess would be joy. I feel as though I'm relatively happy. Of course I could be confusing happiness with being content with who and where I am in life. There are several things throughout a day that will make me smile: one of my cats doing something foolish, a student making a funny remark, getting to see a friend unexpectedly, or just hearing a favorite song on the radio. So I guess what I'm trying to say is I have lots of little joys and am rather happy overall. I guess I would choose happiness.

I choose Joy because I cannot choose happiness. I will only feel happiness when I am in heaven with my Father. Happiness we can't choose it just comes over us, but joy is a gift and technique from God, by looking to Him and keeping our lives fixated on Him, we walk and the light and can feel joy.

I define happiness as a state of being, while joy is an emotion.
Happiness is a state in which one truly accepts and desires one's own situation and station in life. A happy woman is happy the way she is, rather than feeling as though life-acceptance comes only through change. (Though this state does not minimize the positive nature of growth and progress)
Joy is an emotion, fleeting but powerful, obvious and consuming.
One could be joyful in a birthday party or a romantic date while feeling discontent towards one's life in its entirety. Conversely, one could be happy with ones life and truly accept the cards dealt while feeling sadness or anger towards a specific event.
Personally, both are nice.

There is a difference. Happiness is more outward, joy is inward. I can BE happy, or I can HAVE joy. I am a Christian but I really have not been able to grasp being joyful. I have it when I am on mission trips, but lose it a while later after I get back.

I think Joy would be a temporary emotion, where happiness is a state of being. Being happy is a way of life, where joy is a bi-product of that and a positive event.

Hey Debra. I choose JOY. Joy has an element of optimism and hope in it that I find comforting. Happiness is a by-product.

Big differance, happiness is dependant on what is happening. Joy comes from within, it's peace knowing that everything is going to be okay no matter what it looks like. There is gospel song that I love, a few of the verses are.....
Lilly of the valley..JOY
I know that He is able... JOY
No food on the table... JOY
In the midnight hour..... JOY
OHHHH....JOY

I think Joy is a spontaneous burst of happiness... whereas happiness itself is a low-level feeling that is supposed to be constant. As for which I'd choose - I'll take whichever I can get!
