It isn't something everyone worries about but normal is too broad a word. It sounds like you are transferring some anxiety in life onto your hair or appearance. This may be a small part of a bigger problem. Maybe you should think about areas in you life that need attention and try to worry less about your hair. Good luck.

Unless your hairbands are pulling your hair out or damaging it too much, does it really matter whether it's normal to fear letting it down......maybe you are afraid of getting it caught or it just bothers you to be in your face. Most people have some little quirky thing going on in their life....this is minor! However if you are completely preoccupied to the point where you can think of nothing else, a little behavioural therapy is in order.

I don't think it's abnormal. Somewhere along your developing years, someone made the comment "let your hair down" in a tone of voice you took to be something bad so now you are conscious about that.
A Friend of mine was constantly reminded by his mother to pull up his socks, and to this day he is constantly tugging on them to be certain they are up. It is most likely a mind set and you might be able to be more comfortable with it by noticing other woman who have their hair down. they don't look evil or unkempt, it is just their choice. Relax a bit my dear and enjoy life.

I hate putting my hair down. I feel like it's frizzy...I always have my hair in a ponytail. I'm convinced that putting my hair down makes me look fatter, uglier, and sloppy. I also carry extra hairbands.
I think whether or not it's normal depends on your reasons not to put it down.

It seems to me that you have a phobia, although I don't know what the name for that phobia is, there are probably others who share the same problem with you. If you feel like it is interfering with your daily life, I suggest that you see your doctor and tell him/her what is going on. Maybe he/she could recommend some type of therapy or even some type of medicine to help you out.
Best wishes! :)

Ahw, hun! That isn't normal. Although I'm rarely seen with my hair down, I don't fear it. Although it may be scary, ask a doctor about it.
Best wishes,
Kate

It's not normal at all. I would go to the doctors and let them know about this problem.
