it is very difficult. Just plan ahead. dont let your child nap- wake them up early so that they will hopefully get tired and sleep on the plane. second take a whole bag of distractions- food, quiet toys, etc. think about how long an object can hold your child's attention span at home, and plan to bring enough things to occupy them for the whole trip. A new toy may be a good choice too, and if you have one a portable DVD player with head phones and a favorite movie may be another choice.

If they breast feed, nurse them on take-off and landing. It will keep their ears from plugging up and aching.
Bring lots of sensory activities, like "texture" books, bright toys, and maybe a DVD player with the "Baby Einstein" or Sesame Street series. A stuffed animal that has different textures and makes a sound or two (nothing too disruptive) can also help. Good luck!

take him to somewhere fun where he can be really active for a couple of hours or most of the day if possible. make sure he's doing as much physical activity as he can stand and having lots of fun. give him some sugary treats about 1 hour before you leave the fun place and continue to let him do his little kid thing. this worked perfect with my nephews.

It'll be difficult....but try coloring together, reading books, and asking questions and talk as you do these things together.
Get a book from the library on simple games using the fingers to tell a story.
Give him/her a chance to just rest or cuddle beside you, sing gently.
