A successful student needs not be an honor student but more often than not they are. The how-tos are simple:
Read ahead - You read the required text book even when it is not yet time such that when you go back to it when reading assignments come, all you need is just pan over it (yet you have retained an understanding on what the discussion is all about).
Be punctual with every turn-in - When there are deadlines, you submit on time, never late, never asking for extension.
Research - Checking related materials to a given subject or course expands the perspective (and allows you greater depth of analysis and broader objectivity).
Participate - In class discussions, always join in with a substantive remark here and there. Chances are, the teacher will skip over you during graded recitations yet you get full marks.

Finally, be sociable. Be friends with your classmates, show that you are a good listener. They will respect you more for it such that when it is time for you to talk, no one will interrupt you without hearing out your side first--be it within the classroom or without.

Terminal Note: Successful students do not necessarily succeed in real life but they always have greater chances to succeed. For this part, it is the "drive" or "motivation" and determination to achieve a life-goal that calls the shots.

Being a student is just a mask on a human being.

And it depends on what you consider as the most important
things to be a successful student.

The Key Factors:

a-Good in grasping knowledge
b-Good in thinking based on the grasped knowledge
c-Good in questioning the knowledge imparted

The Importance of the Key Factors:

a- is enough to score marks in the exams.
b- is enough to provide solutions to problems when you work.
c- is necessary to be a forerunner and innovative person.

LAST BUT NOT THE LEAST:
Education is just a tool for navigating the map of life.
Whereas it's the thought process that can take you from one
place to another in that map.
