make another one back quick like. If you have a spontaneous nature, it shouldn't be that hard. If you can't, think of something Mel Brooks would say, he's full of them in all his movies.
The most important thing to you is to acknowledge the other person, acknowledge the other person's comment, carry on the conversation AND possibly embarress them in a subtle way only intelligent people will understand. You can do that easily enough by saying something in a matter of fact tone, while insulting them in a backhanded kind of way. And always reference something from the cutrrent media coverage of a big news or pop culture icons.

It depends a lot on what the insult is. In some cases, responding just gives more fuel to the insulter. You can usually put a full stop to that nonsense by giving them a condescending smile and shaking your head slowly. Then walk away.

Shoot right back at them, but always with a smile. Then you can always say you were just kidding back. I can never think of the witty comeback til I'm in the car on the way home!

Sometimes saying a mature answer back to them makes the best retort to them then making a retort to them. It show's that you are more grown up then they are.

Take the high road. Say something like, I pity you. I feel sorry for you because you feel the need to insult others in order to feel better about yourself.
