I've always been somewhat active, but 2 weeks ago I began daily doubles for my high school volleyball team, and I've also been running a mile or two several times a week. My daily doubles are now over and I only have practices once a day, but I've been running the same amount. Towards the end of my runs my shins will start to hurt mostly on the inside of my leg instead of the front or outside. When I finish the pain gets more intense and then after about 20 minutes the pain goes away unless I put pressure on the part of the bone that is about 3 or 4 inches above my ankle. It seems like the pain has been getting worse instead of better the more I exercise. What can I do (aside from rest, because I can't stop going to practice or running) to stop the pain and stop it from progressing? Thanks!

I know you said you can't stop running but trust me you absoultly can not run through shin splints. The more you work them the worse they're going to get and the longer they're going to take to heal. The best thing you can do for yourself right now is to take it easy. The sooner you do this, the sooner you'll get better.

stretching the front of your shin by pointing your toes helps. but be careful, they are no joke. i had really bad shin splints and the tiny fracture turned into a real fracture and I was limping in pain for over 3 weeks, after i had stopped what caused the injury in the first place (jump roping)

Have a doctor evaluate this pain. You and the doc should be able to work out a plan to deal with it; but it's important for the doc to find out what's really going on. Don't self-diagnose, and don't let your coach or another team member diagnose the problem. They are not doctors and are not allowed by law to make a medical diagnosis.
