I'm aware that I need to use the crate method etc but I just want to be sure to train at the proper age. Can I train now or do the puppies need to be a little older? (If so how much older) They are Chihuahuas (one is mine, the other is my husband's)

A 6 week old Chihuahua is too young to be weaned from the mom. Did the breeder give you any advise on the care of these tiny breed dogs?
The only thing I ever use a crate for, if it is a puppy, is as a den,
They will need to be in a small (possibly 3 X 5) area.
If there is any way to gate off a small section of your kitchen, use it as their home with the crate being their den, without the door.
They need to be able to "see" people, never stick them off in the back bathroom away from human traffic.
Be sure they have water and food down at all times, a small breed like a Chihuahua does not need to be restricted to timed eatings, but need to be allowed to eat and drink as much as they want. They suffer from low blood sugar (SUPER EASY TO PREVENT) just add Karo Syrup (or sugar) to their water daily for the next 2 or 3 months. Just enough to sweeten, it may make the puppy "ping" but that is better than having it go into shock and die. Low blood sugar in a Chihuahua is a KILLER.
In their little area have paper or pee pee pads placed directly in front of the crate, with the feed and water to one side.
All puppies will try to get out of their beds to go pottie if they can, they do not want to sleep in it.
They will not be able to hold their business for very long at a time (1 month =1 hour...2 month old = 2 hour.... 3 months = 3 hours you get the idea)
They are at the perfect age to start teaching now, considering a Chihuahua can hardly walk before 4 weeks of age, trying to pottie train them any younger would have been useless.
Also be sure they sleep alot (A LOT)
Good luck with the babies.

I would 6 weeks old is about time to introduce them to potty training. Just be sure not to take them where a lot of other dogs have been, they are so suseptable to diseases at this age. Remember that they are puppies though and dont push them too hard. Once they are maybe 9 months old go all the way with the training.

Crate train them and start immediately. When you take them out of the crate, take them outside. As soon as they eat take them outside. And when they wake up, take them outside. Don't let them start going potty in the house. Use a crate big enough for them to turn around. With them being a small breed, you may have some trouble. Don't get frustrated. They have very small bladders and really can't hold it that long.

you can start them now. you can start them as early as 4-5 weeks. i breed golden retrievers and i start my pups at 5 weeks and they do very well. yes the crate is the best method to go for potty training. they are not to young they can be trained now. just beware that the small breeds are the hardest to potty train. you will need to be patient with the little guys and they will learn. good luck

purely one contained in the muddle? Too undesirable. Singletons could be hardship because of the fact they have not got the conventional training of the whelping container. puppies can initiate weaning at 4 weeks. right this is how. Weaning puppies From delivery to age 4 weeks the whelps could be getting all their foodstuff from mom. From age 4 weeks to age 8 weeks, the puppies are slowly transitioned onto good foodstuff with a mix of wonderful foodstuff and heat domestic dog formula. puppies are fed 4 cases in step with day from age 4 weeks until age ten to 12 weeks. The “alien craft” help shop the puppies from walking of their dinner, yet any flat, low-sided pan could be used, which incorporate a baking tray. shop mom far off from the foodstuff until the puppies are taking part in greater desirable than eating and then enable her in to scrub the dish and the puppies. If feeding a uncooked weight loss application, the foodstuff will could desire to be floor for them in the previous being blended with domestic dog formula. The fineness of the grind could be decreased each and every week as their jaws income potential. they're going to wish thicker bones chopped for them as much as age 4 months. If feeding a advertisement weight loss application, then the two soak the kibble or use a foodstuff processor to blend the kibble and domestic dog formula. Week 4 - a thick slurry, additionally prevalent as “domestic dog smoothies” Week 5 - like cooked oatmeal, with little delicate lumps Week Six - has chunks contained in the “oatmeal”, dinner takes a couple of minutes longer because of the fact it now ought to be chewed somewhat of slurped Week Seven - in general good products, merely fairly softened, can sprinkle powdered formula over good foodstuff and upload heat water in the previous serving Week 8 - good foodstuff with heat water further merely in the previous serving, the formula could be deleted

Start traing them now, well not training but getting them used to going where you want them to go. They say for every month old it is how long they can hold it. so by that number they an hold it an hr and a half. but just get them used to going where you want them to go and give them the oppurtunity to go on that schedule. repetition is a good thing with training, start them early.

These puppies aren't old enough to be weaned from their mothers yet.

A puppy can't start house training before twelve weeks.

6 weeks is a good point, you actually start as soon as their eyes open. Start putting them in one place to do their business so they understand, feed them in the same place and at the same time etc.

I would try to start as soon as possible...just take them outside after they eat and maybe they will learn a little bit quicker if you start early
