I am an ex-economist, trainee counsellor, and passionate participant in my spirituality, and I hope you will understand that I have a basis for not accepting the premiss of your quest. I do not believe that one can use economic theory to explain human behaviour. (I'm not even sure one can use it to explain human economic behaviour ....) Nor do I see how one can, or should, use it to explain religious behaviour. Some psychologists think they can explain religion away by measuring what goes on in our brains and some sociologists purport to explain it away by understanding the dynamics of cultures, but the truth is that religion, like homosexuality, has existed in all cultures and all time-periods (including those where it has been suppressed) and the simple "Ockham's razor" explanation is that there is a God(dess) and there is an afterlife (or more than one) and there is a purpose in life and therefore people belong to religious or spiritual communities.

I think that you're trolling the wrong waters for post grad students. I would hope that they'd have more important things to do than answer questions from illiterate morons, like me.

BTW, I take offense at your elitist, exclusionary prerequisite that respondents must be post grad students. I am quite sure that in your erudite pursuits, you could learn a few things from the uninitiated.

Cheers, dick head.
